Ever wanted to make your own watercolors? Here is an easy beginner watercolor binder recipe with ingredients and tools you will need, and also the steps on how to make a handmade watercolor paint binder. When you have made your binder you can mix or mull it with artist pigments, mica, or even recycle your old eyeshadow into watercolor paint!

Making your own watercolor paint is a fun, simple, and rewarding process, the first step is to make the binder which combines with your pigment to create a paint that will dry and stay on your paper without rubbing off.

⌛ *** NOTE: This binder is best if left to homogenize and settle down overnight - so be prepared to wait this time before actually using it to make your paint.***

(some items are optional and you can get any brand you want but I put them in this list just so you know what they are):
• 45g (45ml) Distilled Water
• 25g (≈ 3.5 level Tbs) 100% Pure Acacia Fiber / Gum Arabic Powder
• up to 10g (≈ 2tsp) Vegetable Glycerin
• up to 5g (≈ 1tsp) Honey (I used raw & unfiltered)
• 100% Pure Clove Oil (optional)

🍯 FEEL FREE TO REDUCE (or remove) THE GLYCERIN or HONEY FOR DIFFERENT PIGMENTS if they are turning out too glossy or sticky, you may have to experiment.

• Clean Storage/mixing jar - I used an 8oz mason jar
• Clean, non-porous mixing stick - I used a little SS spoon from Daiso
• Spoon or scoop for powder
• Separate, clean jar/dish to measure out the powder
• Kitchen Scale - this is the one I own:
• OR Measuring Spoons and Liquid Measuring Jug
• Microwave, kettle or stove

Wow. This was an excellent tutorial!! This is my second time researching binders in the last 9 months or so, and by far the best! First tried for gilding, so I had everything but the clove oil. Gotta try, as I've been wanting to make paints from Let's Resin Mica Powders. Tyvm for sharing your expertise. The world is a better place having generous souls in it such as yourself! 🎉

I laughed at the "manage your expectations" from editing Jannah. It got me good 😂

Thanks so much! I really appreciate the precision in the amount of the ingredients. I've seen other recipes which were a lot more "a dash of this and a few swigs of that" which isn't very helpful for a newbie (or a one-time chemistry major like me!). Can't wait to try this out.

Fascinating and very, very useful! I sometimes grind ochres collected from the environment and will try your method for binding in the near future. Cheers Jannah 👍

Thank you for this clear instruction video. Although I use regular premade watercolors, I still have about a kilo of genuine manganese blue pigment (PB33) which is no longer made. I'll go try to make it into a usable watercolor using your instructions.

Hey guys! Here is a quick and easy tutorial on how to make a watercolor paint binder so that you can make your own watercolor paints. This recipe makes quite a small batch and works great for metallic micas, but feel free to experiment if it does not perform the way you wish - I sometimes reduce the amount of glycerin and honey for different pigments, depending on the results (too shiny or sticky)

Hi! Thank you so much for this video! I want to make some water-colour paints so this is super helpful. I do have one question, if I have gum arabic but in liquid form would it function the same to make the binder? Because I can't seem to find many recipes with it in liquid form so I just want to make sure if the only way is to make them with powder gum arabic or if I can use the liquid.

Great tutorial! I really wish there was a measurement in ML rather than gms. Some scales have both and tutorials will display both just in case people like me don't have kitchen scales. Thank you so much for the recipe!

If I want to store my paint in a jar or a tube, what do I have to put in the binder so that it won’t mold?

Not sure you can answer this, but can gum arabic be substituted with guar gum? I have both, but thinking of using up the guar. Any thoughts on this?
