Here is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time now - learn how watercolours are made. A few weeks ago, I met Ryan. He is, above being a bubbly and fun person, someone that is as silly excited about watercolours as myself. He started his company serendipitously after hitting a road block trying to find the perfect shade of gold. We quickly became friends and have started to share what we know with each other. This will be the first video among many more of our learn/teach dialogues. The master hands you see here are his, while I focused on learning from him and filming the beauty of the making process. There’s such intimacy in knowing about making paints, like chef growing their own ingredients. I can't wait to paint with these. Part 2, coming soon!

I see that you did not include glycerin in the mixture. Would clove oil substitute the glycerin? Also, we would appreciate it if you can tell us the ratios in the mixture. Good video! And thanks for sharing it with us :-))

The clove oil.. do you use clove oil from the leaves or the blossoms? Apparently they are two different available.

What are the tools called that you use to mix? The clear plate you put down at the beginning, and the tool you use at the end to smoosh around the pigment. :)

Don’t you find that your paint stinks to all using so many drops of clove oil in a small batch? I added a few drops in about 2 cups if gum Arabic I made and holy fish! I had to toss it. All I could smell was the clove oil. I hate the stuff.
