Travel Channel’s Man v. Food was one of the network’s most popular shows in the late 2000s and early 2010s. It made Adam Richman into an instant star, as fans loved to see him traveling across America to explore food culture and find some of the country's best eateries.

Every episode ended with an eating challenge, usually either a large quantity of food or something super spicy. Watching Richman gorge his way through a 190-pound burger or suffer through the world’s spiciest wings made for great television.

It’s no wonder that it was one of the highest-rated food shows on television. To find out more about this hit show, here is the untold truth of Man v. Food.

Back in 2009 as a senior in high school, I would skip class with a few buddies of mine and we would go to restaurants and make our own eating challenges. Just a couple of teenage kids trying to reenact man vs food. Good times. Thanks for the great memories Adam.

The owner didn't surprise him with overly spicy food as much as he almost killed him by dumping a huge amount capsaicin extract directly into the sauce which they normally wouldn't do.

During that wing challenge the mics were still open and he later heard the owner saying to put more extract then normal.

There's no doubt that the spectacle of food challenges diminishes as time goes on. It's a wonder that he was able to ride the wave of the show's success for years - he made food challenges a bit more popular with this show. I always wondered about his health, but without anyone publishing actual reports from his doctors it's all speculation. Clearly though this type of activity isn't going to do wonders for anyone in the long run

FUN FACT: Adam Richman consumed more calories of food on that show than the entire jewish population in the 1940s
