We had the same childhood Tae. Thanks for sharing your story. That pencil case story just hit my heart deeply. Wishing you and your family the very best!

Tae nailed the issues and benefits of growing up poor. I can totally relate. I still remember my half sister told my parents not to give me money because I used it to buy a $5 ninja turtle toy. Even without car, I took the train and bike for interview. I learn to work with what I have. I have became resourceful or creative. I have a thick skin from so called better off friends. I am so glad they are gone. I learned to save and avoid interest. I am able to buy the transformers toy I wanted as a kid now.

I am pretty successful in life now and being raised poor as a kid I know I still can:

Eat at home even if it is mainly rice and dark meat chicken.

Cable TV? Streaming service? Internet? Free entertainment with an old TV with rabbit ears and some aluminum foil is magical.

If the house is hot in the summer go outside take in the breeze. A box fan with a wet towel does wonders. If you are still cold...it just means you need to put on ANOTHER coat and pair of socks.

Vacations....what is that? Camping 4 hours away in a tent still will create memories.

**Getting older now...A/C and Heat gets more important each year as I get older ...

I have an old pencil case with brand-new pencils and pens for the exact same reason. Also, some of the cute erasers that look like flowers or something.

When my grandparents passed away, I had to clean out the attic in their home. The attic was completely filled with 1000 brand new things that were still in wrappers and boxes all being saved to use for a better day because they had lived through the depression. Sadly, the vast majority were destroyed after sitting for over 50 years in a hot attic.

As a kid the idea of having a fridge with an ice dispenser was the pinnacle of the upper-class. Now I'm lower middle-class but i got the ice dispenser 😎

Vampire garbage bag. Been there. Also had eye holes in sheets to be a ghost another year.

Controversial opinion, but I grew up poor as well. My mother and grandmother were both terrible/neglectful care givers. Fuck'em! I also don't need to, "forgive them for myself" either. I don't dwell on them often. That being said, I'm grateful for where I am today. Life is better than it has ever been and I consistently strive for improvement.

I guess the reason I'm typing all this is because I want others to know. You don't need to forgive or make amends with those who've done you wrong in your life to be successful. That's not to say don't make amends with people, by all means do so. However, if you have people you really do not want to amend with, don't believe the hype of with out it, it will stunt your growth.

My sister and I were raised by a single mother in the 70s. The skills I learned have helped me tremendously in life. I learned the power of money and saving. I went in the Army to get college money. It was tough and I scraped by on a horrific budget. I had friends who had everything handed to them. I self-educated about investing in the markets. I retired debt-free at 55 and enjoy a quiet peaceful life with my wife.
