Really good video, excellent handling to display the characteristics of the different versions. I'm also a Bo staff fan, from white oak, to burnt rattan, iron wood, expandable aluminum, and just plain hard wood. I mess with all of them but, I don't have your technique. Regardless, they are great for self-defense, and fun to play with, so good job again, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

I have (among others) both a tapered and a white oak staff. Tapered seems faster, the oak seems harder hitting. Both are nice.

I don't see a poll in the community tab, so I'll do everything here.

My first bo was an inch-and-a-quarter bo from Century. I think it was five feet long. It was painted black, but I think it was white oak. On one of my first hits on a heavy bag, I hurt my wrist a little bit. I then corrected my form to avoid hurting my wrist. During that session or maybe on my next bag section, I broke the staff against the bag. Getting so little from my first bo was very disappointing.

I ended up buying some hickory dowels from a lumber supply place in Ohio. One was an inch-and-a-quarter dowel that was five feet long. I worked with that one a little bit. I sanded and oiled it very thoroughly. I tend to put it in my vehicle to serve as a walking stick when I'm not walking with a cane. I also bought inch-and-a-half hickory dowels at five and six feet. Again, I sanded and oiled them thoroughly. I don't think I can break an inch-and-a-half thick hickory bo on a heavy bag. The six-footer is close to four pounds, and I like it for simple spins to build arm and shoulder strength. I can hit the heavy bag pretty hard with that one. The five footer is a little over three pounds, and I use it for warming up sometimes and for hitting the heavy bag. I also use the six-foot bo as my daily walking stick. If I encounter a crazy coyote or mountain lion and can't draw a pistol in time, I can put a pretty hard strike on either of them. At this point, I'll say that my favorite bo for myself is the six-foot long, inch-and-a-half thick hickory bo. I don't do any fancy tricks. I have too much arthritis in my shoulders to do any really good spins. I just do basic spins for conditioning.

If I were going to buy one of these, I'm not sure which I would choose.

One consideration would be finding a good bo to use in model photography. A flexing bo might end up looking odd in a photograph, so maybe I would choose one of the first two. The tapered bo might be the lightest and therefore best for many models. The simple white oak bo would also be nice because of the simple look. The one advantage to the rattan bo would be the extremely light weight, but I can't imagine a model who would have a problem with either of the other two.

If I were buying one for myself to use, I might consider the rattan bo. I know the feeling of hitting a bag with a white oak bo (and the feeling of the bo cracking in my hands). I know the feeling of hitting a bag with a heavier hickory bo that doesn't break. If I want to know the feeling of a foam bo, I could probably just use a piece of PVC. Buying a rattan bo would allow me to know the feel of hitting something with a good rattan bo.

I would also consider the tapered bo for the pure cool factor. I'll never do the fancy tricks, and I fear that I would break a tapered bo if I hit the bag. Even, the tapered bo is just really, really cool. Using it occasionally for practice would be fun because it's so cool.

If I ever found a partner who wanted to train a little in real contact, I'd get the foam bo. We'd also have to get other protective gear. Eventually, we'd probably break some of these kinds of staffs, but they would be the wise choice for training.

If I were recommending a bo, I'd recommend the white oak. Maybe I just had bad luck with the one that I broke. I think most people who just want to spin bo a little for exercise, have a nice walking stick, and have something that could be pressed into service in self-defense, the traditional white oak bo seems as if it would be the best choice.

I'm back from visiting family, so I'll go find the other video that I missed while I was getting ready to travel.

I'm struggling to find the right size of bo staff.. I'm 175cm tall (which should be 5ft and 8.9 inches) and in my neighborhood I can only find a bo staff of 182cm, which is like 6ft. Won't that staff be too long in order to learn swinging the staff?
