The bo staff is an ancient weapon used in martial arts or kung fu. It's a well balanced weapon with many use cases. But this week, I learned how to spin the bo staff because it looks really cool when mastered.

Inspired by this video, I tried this myself. In just two hours I've broken: two vases, a ceiling fan, a mirror and a desktop printer

Wish all mistakes were as simple as “go the other way” 😂 awesome video!

Showing your mistakes and how you fixed them makes the difference between a good showcase and an amazing one.

Needless to say, amazing video. Keeping this teaching ethic of embracing the perspective of the student who is still learning; you will make a great and reputable master!

Thanks for breaking down how to do these techniques. Also am glad you are showing problems you ran into and how you fixed them. Most the time you see perfect moves and never the issues that can happen.

I feel your failures and successes are valuable and far better teachings than the “pro’s” that make no mistakes.

As someone who has learned a lot from YouTube, it literally feels like this in the begining- like I need a human to show me I'm not doing it right! I loved this

I remember when I first tried that. I held the staff too close. The staff bounced off the side of my head, broke my brand new glasses and sent my dentures flying out of my mouth to half way across the other side of the room. I very nearly knocked myself out. I still remember what my first sensei told me 25 years ago. My first ever lesson, he said "work on technique first, speed will follow".

Yep -- correcting your stance really helps. With weapons, if you're right handed you'll find yourself in a southpaw stance more often than not. Also, learning spinning without bo fundamentals is part of why you will get banged up when learning. You need to develop an awareness of the bo as an extension of your body for proprioception. It's why we don't teach this stuff till advanced levels. But hey -- you did it despite all the hard knocks! Well done!

I love that YouTubers are your "own kind" 😂😂You're the Tom cruise of staff spinning lol Good call on wearing a helmet because I died when the staff hit you 😩I actually hollered when you did around the world like a boss 😎So proud of you for mastering the moves, Hafu! You're so disciplined and resilient 💪🏽

I appreciate the video, not many people show how much length they must go through to become cool, everyone just does their skills set and shows off to us, makes us feel like fools. Thank you for making me feel normal!

don't fear the pain. pain is a good teacher. it teaches to be careful. helps gaining endurance.

jokes aside. it's a great tutorial. bookmarked for future reference when I have the chance to begin this travel myself. I spent years trying to discover how to do it. now I know. thank you sensei.

Loved the video! I know your pain as I have been training myself. The helmet idea is excellent.. I have not mastered the 3 rd movement, but I think your video will help. So thank you!

Now do it the opposite direction of rotation. When I used to twirl, I usually used a few fingers, not a full grip like you're using there. It looks difficult the way you're doing it but it's impressive looking.

Last year I saw this video for the first time and it inspired me. I have gotten very good at the Bo staff over the last year and I wanted to thank you for the inspiration.

And now i found i came up with real techniques.
