I have had hep c for almost 40 years. I did two drug studies using interferon injections that I was told could help eradicate hep c from my body. I always had liver enzymes checked and they remained under 45 (anything above is not good). But after losing job and health insurance, I stopped getting checked. Since I was told 20 years was expectancy for hep c to damage liver, I blindly believed I had overcome it. After falling on my birthday, CAT scan was done and found cirrhosis. I have no symptoms so I am hoping for the best. Depending on what stage it is in, the doctor told me that the liver is a forgiving organ. If liver is not too damaged, I can take the hep c antiviral drug to stop further damage and doc says there are treatments to reverse damage done. The liver is only organ that strives to survive under dire circumstances and can replenish unhealthy cells. I pray that is where I stand after my diagnosis. I apologize for writing a book but I just wanted to tell my story. I believe there is still hope. Forty years with hep c and still going, hopefully, for the long haul. Stay positive and keep hope and God in your heart. ❤

I enlisted in the mid 70's in the Air Force, and we were all inoculated in both arms with Ped-o-jet injectors, and 26 years later I was diagnosed with Hepatitis C. I started Interferon (shots, 1/day) and Rebetol (caps, 6/day) for 48 weeks of hell. It made me suicidal. And it failed.
Then, a year later, I started a second 48 week long round of treatment, the new, improved version of Interferon called Peg-Intron, and the Rebetol capsules. It worked. I was diagnosed "undetectable" in 2005. I thought I won my life back. I ate mostly organic, avoided most GMOs, cut down on sugar, etc. I drank mostly spring water. Then, in November 2014 I was diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver. Now how could the damage continue when I was doing so much better?
I'm 70 now, feeling pretty rough. I wish one of these fancy hospitals would help me. I've been through all this solo. I had to fight the V.A. for 13 years to get my Service Connected status. Thirteen years of hellish struggling. And all I ever did was enlist. Now the V.A. won't give me my backpay... they owe me over $150k.
My days are numbered.

I traced my hepatitis C back to the latter 70s, but was not aware that I had it until 1990. No symptoms with the exception of every great once in a while feeling like I had hit a brick wall for a few days but associated that with raising five kids. I can’t remember when my cirrhosis was diagnosed, but I tried chemo for HEP C in 2010 with only a 50% cure rate and an 11 month treatment that, after three months, wasted me away, and I was already pretty thin. I opted to halt and wait for a better treatment to come out and in 2016 after six months of 1 Harvoni pill a day was cured. I have regular liver ultrasounds and so far my cirrhosis has stayed stable. Fortunately for me, it is not advanced and is still fairly mild. I’m so happy that you were able to get your HEP C cured. I don’t know what this means for us with regard to liver cancer. I’ve already had breast cancer twice and skin cancer once, but I’m not looking over my shoulder for any cancer monster. Life is too short, and I wish you all the very best with your cirrhosis!!!

There is a growing body of evidence that supports the use of adult stem cells for liver and pancreatic islet cellular regeneration. Recent progress in the culturing and targeted differentiation of haematopoietic (human derived) stem cells to pancreatic and hepatic lineages is especially promising.
