Liver cirrhosis means scarring of the liver in layman terms.
When the liver is repeatedly injured by agents such as hepatitis B or alcohol, the liver tries to repair itself by growing new liver cells.
In the process, scar tissue forms.
As the damage progresses, more and more scar tissue forms, making it difficult for the liver to function properly.

Many types of liver diseases and conditions can damage healthy liver cells causing cell death and inflammation.
In Singapore, the most common cause of liver cirrhosis is Chronic Hepatitis B.
Click on the top right of your screen to find out more about Hepatitis B and how we can prevent hepatitis B.
While not every Hepatitis B carrier will become cirrhotic, approximately 20-40% may end up with cirrhosis if their condition is not monitored
Other causes include alcohol, Hepatitis C, fatty liver or Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, autoimmune liver disease and many other less common causes.

You are more likely to get cirrhosis of the liver if you
- abuse alcohol for many years
- if you have chronic viral hepatitis
- have a history of liver disease
- inject drugs using shared needles
- have diabetes or if you are obese

So What are some of the symptoms of liver cirrhosis?
In early or compensated cirrhosis, patients may not have any symptoms.
They may not even know that they have liver cirrhosis.
This is because the liver has enough reserve capacity to cater to the needs of the
body even if scarred.
To know more about the functions of the liver - click on the link to my other video on
the top right of your screen.

However when scarring progresses, the patient is prone to develop
- Fluid retention
- Delayed clotting and increased risk of internal bleeding
- Increase risks of infection
- Increased risks of mental confusion
- Increased risk of cancer

As a result, advanced cirrhotic patients may have symptoms like :
- Tiredness, lethargy
- Jaundice which is the yellow discolouration of the eye and skin
- Loss of appetite, loss of weight and nausea
- Fluid-filled distended abdomen
- Swelling of legs
- Lethargy, confusion, personality change
- Sleep disturbance
- Easy bruising and bleeding
- Possibly even bleeding from the stomach and intestines.

Can cirrhosis be cured?
Unfortunately, cirrhosis cannot be cured. The damage done to your liver is permanent.
However, depending on the underlying cause of your cirrhosis, there may be actions you can take to prevent it from worsening.

Actions include :
- Stop drinking alcohol
- Follow up with your doctor for chronic viral hepatitis to keep it in check
- Avoiding medications that stress the liver
- Eat a healthy, well balanced low fat diet.
Once the cause is treated or controlled, further damage to the liver can be prevented.
Then the liver will have a chance to repair itself.
For end stage liver cirrhosis, liver transplantation provides a cure for cirrhosis patients.
So the key is in early identification and early treatment - so please see your doctor early if you experience any of the symptoms of liver cirrhosis.

Understand that liver cirrhosis is a potentially fatal condition and that it is actually preventable by taking the right actions.

Thank you for the informative video. I realize you know what I am about to say, but, having received a transplant five years ago, and knowing what the general public believe about cirrhosis, I feel compelled to speak.

You mentioned that cirrhosis is often caused by uncontrolled hepatitis B or chronic alcohol abuse, but there are far more causes than just those two. I was diagnosed almost 20 years ago quite by accident. I was in an emergency room with abdominal pain, and the doctor suspected gall stones. They ordered a CT scan, and never found a cause for the pain (which had subsided by then), but found something far worse. The ER doctor asked if I was ever a heavy drinker. I was not, and I have never taken any illicit drug, either. Then she dropped the bombshell: I had cirrhosis. They admitted me, and ran a battery of tests. I was finally diagnosed with NASH. I was in my 30's at the time and was quite healthy - except for NASH. I was unaware anything was wtong, because I had no symptoms. I made some changes in my lifestyle, continued my 'habit' of not drinking, and began to live with my damaged liver. The doctor told me at the time that, I would likely need a transplant in about 15 years. He predicted it nearly to the date. I received a new liver, and have been living well with it for almost five years.

Unfortunately, when many/most people hear that someone has cirrhosis or had a liver transplant, they automatically assume that the person is or was a raging alcoholic, and no amount of explanation will convince them otherwise. As a doctor, you could help inform people. I would greatly appreciate that, as would many others, I'm sure.

I was diagnosed with Alcoholic hepatitis three days ago. I've been drinking heavily for the past 20 years basically. Then I left my wife a month ago and stayed drunk the entire time, only leaving the apartment I rented to take an uber ride to the store to buy a box of wine every two days or so. Somehow she came to see me at the apartment took me to Conway Medical Center and they did an ultrasound on my abdomen. When the doctor diagnosed me he told me I had to stop drinking immediately. He told my wife I had the liver of what looked like a 70 year old. I'm only 43. I haven't slept the past three days and today I'm taking some action to find out if there is a reverse course to stop this. And thanks to God I've moved back in with my wife.

Ok I must’ve missed something. First he said that cirrhosis isn’t reversible, but later on he mentioned the liver “repairing itself”.

I just turned 50 the end of may I have stage 3 cirrhosis of the liver in April I had to be put in the hospital for 10 days and had a blood transfusion spent 4 days in ICU.
All the doctor told me that if i stop drinking alcohol that in a year my liver would ba as good as its going to be.
