Well, the context was a couple that married two years before and yet still, they didn't open the gift's boxes and didn't decide who would do the cleaning (and so on and forth). Soon after, they were divorced. So the meaning was: "It was not just a box carelessly put there, it told a whole different story of huge problems unsolved that foretold the failure of a marriage on many levels."

You really upset him!!!! I've been part of the *anti-box* political movement myself for years. I'm glad it's catching on!!! (Just kidding, of course.
