Striking Boeing workers rejected a contract offer that would have provided a pay raise and some improvements to benefits because it did not include a pension, a deal-breaker for many. CBS News' Kris Van Cleave reports.

The union voluntarily gave up their pension in 2014. They have no one but themselves to blame for that. It is extremely rare for a company to reinstate a pension after it's gone or frozen when there are doing well. There's pretty much a 0% chance when a company is doing as poorly and has as much debt as Boeing currently does. I'm not sure about the union, but I know Boeing salary employees get a 100% 401k match on up to 10% of employee contributions; which is extremely generous compared to most companies. If I were the union I would focus on the GWI and a better 401k match, rather than bring back a pension which will never come back.

Really disappointing that it's come to this point. No doubt this is quickly becoming a hardship not just for striking workers (and their families) but also non-striking employees, vendors/supplies, and the local businesses that depend on Boeing dollars. It seems as if there needs to be just a little more give on both sides to get this done.

The workers who belong to the 'Machinist Union' range from janitors to assembly line workers. Engineers who design Boeing planes belong to a different union and that union is not on strike.

I think it sucks how there boring retirees with pensions and our current Boeing workers won’t get the same.

I’d stay striking too with all this unfairness going around.

These IAM members don't know a good deal when they see it - a substantial increase in pay; a bonus for crippling not only a company, but its non-union employees who many are losing their jobs, Boeing's customers, suppliers and local economies; and a very generous 401K program whereby members can manage their own retirement. Holding out for a pension plan is not only greedy, but foolish. Two things I know: I'd never want a union member as a friend since they don't give a damn what happens to others based on their actions and I'd never own a company if there was a strong possibility of a union infiltrating my business.

It is just feeling "want" not "need" for pension.No worker gonna suicide or homeless if no pension but lossing job do.
I know people max matching Boeing 401k - now they have well growth retirement budget. Unfortunately, people mispercept that pension is free money - it is not - the company have to give lower paid in order to defer it to pension fund. Even worst majority of pension fund today are underfunded. I feel sad that union leaders let members stuck on "fantacy" in pension dream. The best thing union leaders should do is have a spine to tell the truth to members that "pension is unnegotiable - lets move on to what negotiable"
