Victoria's Book Review: Human Acts by Han Kang

Gwangju, South Korea, 1980. In the wake of a viciously suppressed student uprising, a boy searches for his friend's corpse, a consciousness searches for its abandoned body, and a brutalised country searches for a voice. In a sequence of interconnected chapters the victims and the bereaved encounter censorship, denial, forgiveness and the echoing agony of the original trauma. Human Acts is a universal book, utterly modern and profoundly timeless. Already a controversial bestseller and award-winning book in Korea, it confirms Han Kang as a writer of immense importance.

The line "After you died I couldn't hold a funeral, so my life became a funeral" still haunts me to this day. Especially in the original Korean "당신이 죽은뒤 장례식을 치르지 못해 내 삶이 장례식이 되었습니다"
As a bilingual I got to read both the original Korean and the English translation and man even as someone who is really familiar w/ the subject as my father's from Gwangju, it was a harrowing read

It's a video from six years ago. I'm so ashamed of myself as a Korean who hasn't read it yet. I'm not ready to cry yet... I've read some other books by Han Kang. People around the world are watching Han Kang's warm eyes on humans... I think it permeates into her world view of human life and death. Thank you for the good video.

Thank you so much for this! I’m so glad I found this as I was having a hard time understanding at first as I truly want to ready the book and know exactly what’s going on from the beginning. Again, thank you so much for this wonderful information & insight on this topic as well as the author. 🫶🏼
