Queen Elizabeth I was willing to pay the ultimate price for beauty, wearing makeup consisting of white lead-based foundation and red lipstick containing mercury. Despite the risks, she refused to sacrifice her appearance and her legacy continues to dazzle us centuries later. #queenelizabethi #makeup #smallpox #leadbasedfoundation #redlipstick #royal #queen

I read that makeup remover also contained mercury. Although apparently it was quite rare for her to remove it.

And she had blisters so the chemicals were more absorbed..and she was in a loop...more scars and wounds, more makeup, skin falling, more makeup..

Shaved a few years off her life? I'm pretty sure she lived till the age of 70 after having reigned for 45 years! Making her one of the longest reigning English monarchs

The foundation she wore wasn’t actually foundation. It was chalk. And for the “lipstick”, it was smth Else but I can’t remember. In her paintings, she never looked like that. Her nose was crooked so were her teeth bc she was obsessed with sugar and since it was the 1500s - 1600s, hygiene never rlly existed

Edit - she told the painter to paint her but with a reference, kinda like how Anne Of Cleeves did when she looked different in her portraits

I wonder what things we have today that we'll look back on and know were deadly

She lived to 69, an impressive age for the time, and even more so with that deadly makeup she kept piling on. She also had rotting teeth, and infections from that could have taken a few more years off too.

The truth of why she wore her makeup was to hide her "swarthiness" her hair was curly and her body was voluptuous one of her close advisors said this about her when she had no makeup

"Shaved a few years of her life" ... Considering that she reached the age of 70 when the average was 50. Her father died at 55, her stepmothers died at 50, 35, 29, 42, 19, 36.
Her sister died at 42.
Evidence enough for you?
Very few people reached the ripe age of 70. And these were royals, aka best living conditions.

ALSO, I'm not sure we can trust those accounts about her falling appearance. Most of those accounts were given by ambassadors from hostile countries, eager to prove that she is unfit to rule.

I'm not saying those accounts are totally made up, but I think those ambassadors exaggerated any little flaw.
Lizzie had a huge number of enemies abroad, from the Pope to the king of Spain, every Catholic monarch wanted either to marry or kill her, sometimes both at the same time. And they couldn't stand the fact that she was untouchable.
And don't let me start on the enemies inside the country who wanted to put Mary Stuart on the throne.
Practically every one of these wanted to portray Elizabeth as a freak, to satisfy their wounded ego, or to justify their hatred.
