Got an old fan in your computer that's slow, buzzing or making some other irritating noise? You may be able to save it instead of buying a new one by following the steps in this video, even if its ball bearing is blocked by the plastic.

For anyone trying this. If the bearing is covered by rubber, use a thumb tack to slightly pierce it and work it out without destroying it with the knife. Just did it tonight and the grinding in both of my case fans went away. Good video dude

Never thought it would be OK to poke a hole in the plastic. Thanks for the tip! I love it when someone posts a genuinely helpful DIY how to fix something to save money, and that's all. Most places I go they just want to tell you where you can go to buy a new one and provide you sponsored links in the comments.

thank you, seriously I was able to do this without disconnecting the fan (just unscrewing it) my plastic part came off easily and I just added a dab of oil and using a Q-tip to pick up any extra oil before tesing it when screwing it back in, works like a charm.

Worked like a charm even in 2024. Thank you so much. Had to chisel away at the plastic in the way to make a little hole. Two dabs of machine oil. Soaked up the access with a cloth. Slapped the sticker back on. BRAND SPANKING NEW!

I had 2x new fans in the Amazon cart. Glad I found this video. I gave this fix a shot using good quality bike chain lube, and a little gorilla tape to prevent leaks. A noisy fan and a slow fan are now running like they were brand new.

Now I just need to figure out how to remove my fan.

My NZXT S340 case fan started making a loud noise. Immediately assumed it was the bearing. Quick youtube vid and quick fix.
Cheers

3 in1 OiL is the best for a job like this. Do NOT use WD-40 for the bearing shaft.
WD-40 is nor designed for this. It is NOT OIL! The best is Motor OiL 20W50 in a 21 G Syringe Neddle from your local pharmacy, and your done!

Just a quick tip, after oiling it up use some sorta tissue or even better a cotton swab or even a Qtip to take out the excess oil, last thing you want is oil drops on your boards.

Yep, worked like a charm with the cheapest mechanical oil I could find out there.
No sound and no stopping.
Now lets see how long it will last.

Found your video today, as I was having this issue; I actually used my soldering iron to melt a small hole in the center, and that did it. Hopefully without transferring any hot plastic onto the bearing, but I guess we'll see, eventually. 😅

Work like charm! The airflow is so strong and quiet now. Thx bro!

Thank you it worked. My fan vibrated like hell. I had disassembled, cleaned, used wd40. Bought a new fan (fauty), got sick wasting time in videos showing that the fix to the fan is to buy a new fan (really?). Then I put mineral oil. That's it.

dang at the beginning the video I was like
"Oh cool I bought an NZXT case too!"

Then he starts explaining you have to dig out the stupid plastic they decided to put in the way...
"Dang NZXT... caught slacking." :(

hello, thanks for the video. quick tip: use a pair of tweezers to remove the silicone covering the bearing. this way it stays intact and you can put it back in after oiling the bearing.
