I love how "Titanic" is just now a synonym to great sinking like "Dark Souls" is to hardgames.

I grew up in a town of 4, 000 people.

To me, this disaster is like if my entire hometown was consumed by fire, and the only survivors were a single classroom of students from the local school.

God.

The Sulpicio Lines is still operation with a different name today. But the Doña Paz was the beginning of a series of disasters ahead. Doña Paz sister ship the Doña Marilyn was sunk due to a typhoon the following year 300 dead. The Princess of the Orient in 1998 due to a typhoon and 150 dead. And lastly the Princess of the Stars also sank due to a typhoon with 700 dead.
In 2015 the maritime authorities revoked the company's certificate of public convenience license. They no longer operate passenger ferries and only just cargo.

I first knew about this story when I was a kid. In the Philippines, we have the saying "kaya yan" or "pwede yan" (that's doable). This often result in Filipino's lack of discipline, in many cases leading to negligence, injury, and/or death.

Thank you for talking about this, in the Philippines, the Dona Paz is almost entirely forgotten by the general public, as a Filipino, this means a lot.

It's crazy that in 1987 both ships didn't have a working radio, that is just mind blowing both of these ships were a ticking time bomb.

What an absolutely heartbreaking story. All those lives lost, and for what? A desire for money. Appalling.
Fantastic storytelling on your part, Sam, very well done.

Might I recommend a vid on the Oceanos. It was an ocean liner that sank off the coast of South Africa. It is an amazing rescue story despite the captain and crew being worse than those on the Costa Concordia.

I love how passionate you get with this kind of injustice, you don't just tell the story.
Such a terrible accident, followed by the worst of human nature. Sadly, things like this happen every day here in Argentina with subways (not so much now due to the situation), people travel like sardines..
Great content Sam, keep it up!

Absolutely outrageous that both vessels were allowed to sail under these conditions. Great coverage of such a horrible incident. Thanks.

You finally covered Doña Paz. I am a viewer from Philippines. Truly, this is heartbreaking - especially that the company which operated Doña Paz, managed to get away from the responsibilities.

I squirmed when you said how the teenager’s skin was so badly burnt it came off. Really horrible disaster and the aftermath was not that much better.

I really hate the fact that the company who owned Dona Paz got away with it so easily. It's just so painful to imagine all the humana who lost their lives in this horrible way and all the relatives who never got any justice...

Thank you for making this video and for bringing up such an important but tragic topic like Dona Paz. 🙏🏻

One of my biggest questions about the Dona Paz, is why do we remember the Titanic far more? I really only know about the Dona Paz through researching maritime disasters.

25 survivors out of 4386 people, that's more than 98% of people lost. While with the Titanic, I mentioned in the comments of the Estonia video that roughly around 68% was the amount of people lost with the Titanic. That to me, easily makes the Dona Paz a disaster far worse than the Titanic.

This is quite possibly the most awful maritime disaster I have heard of... fire is an awful thing
