Re: Carrots. The shorter varieties are easier to grow in the fall. Try ox heart or some of the French market garden shorties. I also use peg board to cover my carrots from critters, early frost. As they grow just add blocks or bricks to raise the peg board. Lets in some light & air.

I just planted carrots, beets and radishes a couple days ago (zone 9 a) . I planted my first spring/summer garden this year and I was plagued with earwigs, crickets, voles and white flies. Entire crops of squash and cukes and even bell peppers were wiped out by a vole. In fact that little bastard is still eating my green onions. I’ll plant peas today, thank you for the tips!

I live in zone 5 in Central Illinois. Our temperatures have gone from the mid-80's to the mid-60's in a bit more than a week. Our highs this week are in the mid to upper 60's with the lows creaping down to the mid-30's at night. I honestly wouldn't know when to plant fall crops here and if they would even survive a freeze and low daytime temps. My garden this year, even with the garden center purchased tomatoes and peppers didn't do much of anything. I got 3 good roma tomatoes, no Black Krim, 2 bell peppers, but a whole bunch of jalapenos. My radishes didn't do well either. :(
