A tip from another Gardner: use straw mulch. When I made my buckets, I put in first rocks so the drainage holes would never get clogged, then straw because it absorbs water like the clay pots that the plants can then use again-and as the season continues it breaks down and fertilizes the plants. Fill your bucket with soil and plant your plant, then put a good layer of the straw on top too. The light color of straw reflects the sun away from the soil and up to the actual plants giving them a boost while not letting the soil dry up as quickly. We did this in our big containers and they went from nearly having to be watered every day to around once a week.

Thank you I am 73 and always loved gardening but unable to do the heavy gardening anymore so container gardening is great for me.

I like your work, James. Every video is fast, focused, and full of useful information. No hokum, annoying background noise/music, or foolish personal concerns. Keep up the good work.

James, I have learned SO MUCH by watching your videos. I've been gardening for several years, yet every time I watch one of your videos I learn something new. I'm so grateful that you invest the time to provide a fast paced, focused, all details included video. I'm a visual learner and you are an EXCELLENT teacher. Please give Tuck a kiss on the snout from Kate (my canine gardening buddy) and me.

I use native soil as my 1/3 instead of compost. I live in Lancaster PA and even tho the soil is compact and clay. The Summers are so humid and rainy that there's not a drainage issue. That way I can leave out amendments like dolomite lime

I love this guy. He talks quickly and I don’t get frustrated waiting on him to get to the point! Could be my central New York gene!! Js

🪴 I have been an indoor landscaper for over 40 years. One year struggling for Sun for my vegetable crop, I realized WAIT! I know how to grow in containers! So I collected huge containers made for plants with drainage holes, used potting mix, fed it with fertilizer and microbes. Those microbes over years have turned potting soil like Pro Mix into a surprisingly rich growing medium. One year we harvested 250 lbs of tomatoes alone from our driveway in suburban NJ I grew peppers and eggplants successfully there too. Since then I can finally grow peppers…in pots. I love this gents buckets! I know know after a decade or more that if possible the ideal situation is some real garden and pots as well. The pots grow freakishly fast and offer the first harvest. As said here pots require more water and definitely fertilizer. Well done sir…as always!🪴

Thank you for the tips! My husband and I have been container gardening for over 5 years now. Our soil is awful! Lots of clay, and if you dig down more than 1 foot, you start getting brackish water. We live not far from the oceanfront in Virginia Beach, Virginia. This year, we expanded our garden by 522 sq. Feet. We have a large back yard and use different tubs and buckets, making sure that they are food grade. We are growing corn, tomatoes, sweet banana peppers, orange bell peppers, lots of herbs, flowers, sunflowers, and I have two bee houses for leafcutters. You and a couple of other gardening Youtubers give so much information and tips. Keep up the good work! We love seeing Tuck in the video’s, too!

When I use black pots and buckets I put them in the ground about 8 inches down and mulch around them. Helps prevent hot day problems and retains water.

I am doing this on the 9th floor. My neighbors are surprised when I say, I grow apples, and plums... Plus vegetables. I grow 5 different kinds of fruits including strawberries.
I grow all my herbs most of the year long (zone 8b - the Netherlands) You are doing soo good showcasing this. And I am also growing malabar spinach, but the green one. Indeed a perennial in the Caribbean.
Let's go!

I understand the white pots breakdown faster from the sun. What good are the holes on the bottom when no air or water can get through the bottom when the pot is sitting on a board. We cut triangular holes on the side of the bottom too.

Found my 5 gallon food grade buckets at a local health food store for $1.00 each! Bakeries, restaurants are also good options to get free or inexpensive food grade buckets! Thanks for the great video!
