There is no other actor that could play this role better than Clint Eastwood. The way Walt and Father Janovich are always bantering back and forth is hilarious, and the young priest is just as stubborn as he is 🤣... I love the amused look on Clint's face when he turns around and says, "Oh I am at peace"... 😄

My theory on this is that I think right after the war, he went to church or found a priest over there, confessed his sins and all the things that he did in the war
