This is a video in my new Core Concepts series -- designed to provide students and lifelong learners a brief discussion focused on one main concept from a classic philosophical text and thinker.

This video focuses on Epictetus' Discourses, specifically on his discussion(s) of how practical reasoning works.

My videos are used by students, lifelong learners, other professors, and professionals to learn more about topics, texts, and thinkers in philosophy, religious studies, literature, social-political theory, critical thinking, and communications. These include college and university classes, British A-levels preparation, and Indian civil service (IAS) examination preparation

The Stoics are now my personal favorite branch of philosophy. Such a practical application of philosophy. Great stuff. TY.

The Indian metaphor of the charioteer and his horses comes to mind here. Riding a chariot requires a lot of learning, and a lot of practice, as well as a knowledge of what one's horses are likely to do, along with what the charioteer wants them to do. And when it comes time (to get back to the classical mediterranean) to race them in the circus, the practice, learning and intuitions all have to be engaged reflexively as well as intellectually.

thanks again.

"Practical reasoning" = the process of assigning quantitative values to time /space variables in any situation and the formulaic integration of those variables to achieve a result. First described by Hermann Hesse's Glass Bead Game and concretised by me in an original manuscript 55 years ago
