Epictetus, Discourses | The Beginnings of Philosophy | Philosophy Core Concepts

This is a video in my new Core Concepts series -- designed to provide students and lifelong learners a brief discussion focused on one main concept from a classic philosophical text and thinker.

This video focuses on book 2 of Epictetus' Discourses, specifically on his discussion(s) of the beginning of Philosophy as an activity and inquiry. Instead of beginning in wonder or the desire to know - as with Plato and Aristotle - Epictetus maintains that philosophy has its beginning in the experience of conflict between different persons' ideas about how one ought to live, what is good, and what is true.

My videos are used by students, lifelong learners, other professors, and professionals to learn more about topics, texts, and thinkers in philosophy, religious studies, literature, social-political theory, critical thinking, and communications. These include college and university classes, British A-levels preparation, and Indian civil service (IAS) examination preparation

This is great for a newcomer like me. Would you mind having the camera give us one clear shot of your writing on the board so I can take notes from it in a pause of the video? Thanks!

6:27: we have a vague sense of being, but it still is a fact`` H (crosstalk....) . We learn a language with our mothers milk, and that predetermines us to particular virtues. Some one uses the word courage,  and we wonder...what does that mean ? and in the next moment, he lists the possibilities....good lecture. Thank you.
