This is a video in my new Core Concepts series -- designed to provide students and lifelong learners a brief discussion focused on one main concept from a classic philosophical text and thinker.

This video focuses on book 1 of Epictetus' Discourses, specifically on his discussion(s) of divine providence and human beings' place within the providential ordering

My videos are used by students, lifelong learners, other professors, and professionals to learn more about topics, texts, and thinkers in philosophy, religious studies, literature, social-political theory, critical thinking, and communications. These include college and university classes, British A-levels preparation, and Indian civil service (IAS) examination preparation

Thank you so much for making these videos, Gregory. I am currently studying Philosophy at university in Canada and your videos have helped to clarify a lot of these concepts in conjunction with my lectures. You're amazing!

A fascinating view of god. I'm sort of ignostic, in that I am not so sure most people seriously examine what they mean by "god" in the first place - even self-identified atheists. I won't say I am a "believer" as such, but nor do I rule anything out. It always seems to come down to some sort of nuance.

Also, a lot of pro- and hupoleipsis in this. It's starting to look as though these two concepts may be central to Epictetus.

Thanks again.

:-)

I wonder if he is the only one in the room when he's recording these videos or like a whole classroom full of students
