Epictetus, Discourses | Making Progress Towards The Good | Philosophy Core Concepts

This is a video in my new Core Concepts series -- designed to provide students and lifelong learners a brief discussion focused on one main concept from a classic philosophical text and thinker.

This video focuses on book 1 and 2 of Epictetus' Discourses, specifically on his discussion(s) of what it means to make progress towards the Good from a Stoic perspective (and what isn't such progress).

My videos are used by students, lifelong learners, other professors, and professionals to learn more about topics, texts, and thinkers in philosophy, religious studies, literature, social-political theory, critical thinking, and communications. These include college and university classes, British A-levels preparation, and Indian civil service (IAS) examination preparation

Practicing Stoicism has enriched my life. Consistency in it, as you mentioned in this video, is where I've seen the progress though. It takes a lot of work though to habituate Good habits, when we start out differently in life, and/or adopt not so Good habits. The work I've put into this and the progress therein has made it and makes it worth it. And it seems like I've been getting more practice lately w/ this course. I use what I've learned EVERY DAY in the service industry. :) Thanks Dr. Sadler.

The hardest theory-vs-practice dilemma for me was establishing *which* "theory" I was going to opt to practice. There are so many to choose from in our world (and I imagine in the circles that Epictetus moved in)that making that choice in itself can seem monumentally daunting.

Luckily, our own mortality helps us by essentially forcing us to make a decision. We only have so much time in which to make that choice and act upon it. Or it worked that way for me.

Is Epictetus a representative Stoic? I just completed reading the first book of the Discourses and I'm not really sure how much general Stoic thought and how much Epictetus I'm getting...

Thanks for these videos!

This to me appears as teachings for all who explore these principles of existence and reality of the physical world would then see what it means to be a human being a bit more clearly, as these early philosophers address us with their realizations on virtues from one of their moments in time. From my grasp of the spiritual perspective coupled naturally with the human experience within this one parallel of progression here it would be very helpful with understanding yourself, truly understanding yourself if that is possible in one lifetime. I wonder if any of these philosophers ever discussed the ideas of reincarnationism.
Is anyone else seeing the published date of 12/10/15 and the public comments timeline do not correspond with each other?

ha...."Neo: I know kung fu. Morpheus : show me. " Keep searching for the sage, and maybe one day you will find one near by. ( do not sell your soul to them, keep to your inner citadel!). Embodied wisdom becomes less conflicted, more serene, and less anxiously self-aware as the character becomes virtuous. A hidden little light....very good lecture. thank you.
