Veteran Democratic strategist discusses party's midterm strategy

Democrats could make abortion a key issue in the 2022 midterms after Kansas voters rejected a ballot measure that would have opened the door for more restrictions. CBS News' Robert Costa speaks with veteran Democratic strategist James Carville on "Red and Blue" about the party's strategy ahead of the midterms.

I've watched Carville since I was a young adult on my parent's TV, always liked his analysis, objective, sees both sides of issues, careful to maintain the integrity for which any viewer is trusting his commentary. I'm almost 70. It was great to see him still on the cutting edge.

Glad to hear Carville was/is active in Kansas. After all the hand-wringing about messaging, if they listen to Carville, and listen to Al Fanken's recent CNN interview, the Republicans will be hurting. And I do think the Democrats are listening.

I worked with James on Chuck Robb's run for governor of Virginia in 1982. I had never been involved in a campaign before. I oversaw 20 counties and 5 cities. It was an extraordinarily well organized campaign in part because Carville and Doke were careful to hire people who were not deeply involved in local politics and all the infighting that can involve. It kept local Democratic parties focused on the gubernatorial effort. We won because we kept it clean and free from the hysteria that can plague campaigns. James was fantastic and so much fun to work with.
