Indeed, there is nothing worse than dried pieces mixed in to ruin the compound for smooth application. Another big problem with storing half-used buckets of compound for long periods of time is that they grow mold and become putrid, especially in warm weather. I have discovered and proven a way to prevent this: Put a pool chlorine tablet in a ziplock freezer bag and lay the bag on top of the mud. The chlorine migrates slowly but effectively through the plastic bag. Don't put the tablet directly into the mud or the chlorine level will be overwhelming. Also, when removing the lid later on, stand back to avoid the fumes which come out at first. I also like to put the plastic film on top of the mud like the manufacturer does, then my chlorine tablet bag.

I never was formally trained in drywall work, but my experienced cousin helped me get started on a small project then i took it from there. I mainly just learnrd as i went. Even so, i do almost the same things youre doing. But i never did remix or add water to premix. I just whip up with my trowel the top couple inches right before i scoop it out.

In addition, i often clean up the piece of celophane on top and reuse it when im done for the day to keep the air off the top surface of the mud. It seems to help it to last longer, especially if its a longer time before i come back to finish the bucket.

That's some soupy mud Herrick. You could fix that by mixing it in with the bottom mud with a drill and paddle. HaHa-JK. Some good tips here. The mold issue is really frustrating. It never did that 40+ years ago- they obviously changed the formula. I've been watching your progress on the wall behind you- looking good. Drywall skills are invaluable for the complete handy guy.

Two things one needs to follow as a carpenter, but they're not everything, one is the building code, the other is what we use to call "best building practices" . Your practices here follow the seeing, thanks. For sharing and happy new years.
