Rupert Sheldrake - The Science Delusion: Why Materialism is not the Answer

Since 1981, Dr. Rupert Sheldrake has been researching morphic fields - his hypothesis about form-giving, immaterial fields which serve as a kind of blueprint for creation. Although he succeeded to find more and more evidence supporting his case, his hypothesis has been mainly rejected by the mainstream scientific community. In his lecture "The Science Delusion", Sheldrake points out several scientific dogmas which prevent science from overcoming its materialistic world view...

A real scientist is always open to reconsidering absolutely anything, including the very basis for his belief in science, what it stands for, and how it works.

I wonder how many people in this thread that are hating, have also been science professors at Cambridge. This guy used to be an atheist but also seeker of truth. Many materialist scientists actually end up dying with some sort belief in a divine energy or idea. Based on their own studies. I believe because I have witnessed a miracle in my life. And based on reason and deep thought I have come to know without a doubt that we are not a result of spontaneity, time, coincidence. For a rational mind this just isn't plausible

Looking for consciousness in the brain is like looking for the radio announcer in the radio.

Once we begin to look at non physical phenomenon, science will advance more in ten years than the whole of its existence.

When did Atheism become such a zealous, self-righteous religion? Why do some people troll so spitefully?

The Materialist Creed is what I used to believe until I learned to think. Thank you Dr Sheldrake for putting into questions the doubts we need to face.

very true. It makes complete sense. Of course most materialists wouldn't accept these ideas because they cannot extend compassion to all mankind and nature.

All Truth passes though three stages: First it is ridiculed. Second it is violently opposed. Third it is accepted as being self-evident. ~Arthur Schopenhauer

Brilliantly expressed.
It's a pity though that the pre-closed minds of many within the scientific fields who NEED to hear this, will not.

People here are hostile. Why ? Is there some insecurity present in your minds which causes anger towards an individual freely using his freedom to spew what he believes ? You guys are too invested in your own realities and fail to open up your minds towards alternative possibilities. There are no constraints in which you must base your beliefs. Wake up guys.

Its about the questioning of ideas. That is what I support. And if we question his ideas (which we should), we should question other ideas. That is how we grow in Science.

I guess it's not surprising that so many people view Sheldrake as being deluded himself. They don't realize that their close-minded arguments only serve to prove his point, not invalidate it. This is one of the most brilliant and insightful discourses on science that every lover of science -- and every lover of _truth_ -- should watch.

But where is the afternoon session? I've found several versions of this talk but it is always cut off after the first few dogmas are covered. I've been looking everywhere for the rest of it.

Buckminster Fuller also believed that the eyes radiate and receive high frequency electromagnetic signals that can be experienced as information.

materialism is just as valid as post materialism.  Science has only proven the HOW, not the WHY. we know how things function but not why they function.  Newton himself was upset later in life to realize that his laws of motion prove this.   spirituality and science are hand and hand, no matter how much they hate each other, they are bound to each other and better learn how to get along.

The dogma of animals being machines is extremely immoral. We cannot possibly morally justify treating them the way we do.

@ Jeremy Watts - Sheldrake is opening up a line of inquiry into the cherished assumptions science builds its entire edifice upon. These are worth challenging to see if they hold up when exposed to scrutiny. Science will only advance if science itself is questioned. I accept materialistic reductionism but it is obvious to note its limitations. There are other realms outside the limits of its confines and these are worth exploring. They open up new areas of analysis. They breath life into the discipline. By exploring areas outside materialistic reductionism, materialism takes on a greater precision and its boundaries are more defined. We only know something in relation to something else. Materialistic reductionism is understood because that which is not exists. If we go into greater detail into that which is not materialistic reductionism then both materialism and its antithesis increase in functionality.
