Former university teacher Murali Mohan Sastry left behind a comfortable life in southern India 11 years ago to move with his wife to die in the holy Hindu city of Varanasi. Home to 1 million people, the northern Indian city is also known as the City of Death and has achieved mythical status. By dying in Varanasi, Sastry believes that he will break the tenuous cycle of death and rebirth and reach salvation, a core belief that has drawn many Hindus to the city.

Varanasi is the City of Liberation, from cycles of life and death. Calling it city of death is plain wrong.

I think for elders who have lost their closest and have no social ties to leave behind their life and join this community is quite peaceful.

Benares is older than history, older then tradition, older even than legend, and looks twice as old as all them put together” (Mark Twain when visiting Varanasi 100 years ago).

And I live in this city …never tired to see gangaji ghats basically it’s “Jerusalem” for 3 religions -Hindu, Buddhist and Jainism their origin started from this holy land …

To anyone who is wondering
1. We dont throw bodies in rivers, we cremented them, and then Throw there ashes to the river.

2. The bodies floating in river were during the pandemic, and now after the pandemics gone, things are back to ashes.

3. Anyone thinking he is not getting food, he is just dieting, to eat only as much needed.

4. I am not implementing that this is the best way to die, tbh i wont be wasting my life like that, but its necessary for everyone to understand why they are doing this, also if anyone can spend there final days living in peace by beleiveing in sometime, let them.

Varanasi is indeed famous for that.
People come to die here peacefully. There are cremation grounds all over the banks of The Holy River Ganga.

Varanasi is not the city of death, it is a holy place of spirituality and reflection on life where thousands of people in their final moments of life tries to find peace and confront the reality of death, thus awaiting a peaceful departure from this world.
