Hamburger America burgers look like McDonald's doubles. I like McDonald's doubles but I'm not going to pay 12 dollars for them. Gotham burger is excellent. They have nice seating also.

I wish he opened hamburger America outside of NYC 😕 whole point of it is to make classic middle America/southern style burgers but now he has to work with NYC food costs. I guess that's why the menu is so small (which I like) honestly if you watch George Motz' videos you can learn to make them that good at home (75/25 lean to fat, lotta sweet onions, kaiser or onion roll, pickles, decent American cheese, condiments/sauce if you want).
Also whoever said these burgers looks like McDoubles is just wrong. Usually I disagree with people or ignore it completely but saying they look the same is bull. Promise they don't taste the same. McDonalds has such a distinct smell and taste, doesn't even taste like food tbh.
Long story short, just make it at home. Watch George Motz videos and yea, learn yourself. Secrets I've learned, not just from him
1. Fatty beef, grind yourself if you can, it's not too much trouble you're just lazy. Tallow and bone marrow are your friends.
2. Sweet onions, vidalia onions are best but seasonal. Nevada has good onions too.
3. Dry buns. Kaiser rolls, onion rolls hell even Hawaiian or yeast rolls just never Brioche unless the burger is grilled or super lean or it gets greasy af with brioche.
4. Good pickles. Unless you have a passion for pickles just buy some good ones.
5. Good American cheese, deli style. You can make it yourself (your preferred cheddar, whole milk, sodium citrate, few other things) but it's not worth the hassle. It's very time consuming and 95% of the time its not worth it (tastes better but just go to a deli and get the American cheese sliced off the block)
6. Kewpie mayo. It's expensive but goes a long way or you could make your own mayo which IS NOT a hassle, it's super easy. Kewpie uses only egg yolks, apple cider vin, msg and neutral oil. At home maybe add a bit of dijon to help it emulsify, it's super easy seriously.
7. Cast iron pan/griddle/plancha
8. Get that grease. Beef tallow, fry up your onions and burger patty, eat, strain the oil once or twice, heat up to kill any bacteria, cool and store. Do that and you can use the grease for literally a century if stored right.
I did all these steps tonight (minus making the cheese and buns, friend gave me some pickles) took 40 minutes. Americans are hella spoiled when it comes to food.
All that said I'd never go to most of these places lol NYC is expensive af 😂

All fine, none are worth paying crazy prices for. The thing about a smash burger - a cheap one is as good as most hype ones. All you really need is a good cheese and pickle. Anyone charging $12+ for a double can eat a can of piss
