Bacterial Clearance

A study published in the Scandinavian Journal of Immunology found that intermittent fasting (alternate day fasting for 12 weeks) helped Salmonella-infected mice clear the pathogenic bacteria more quickly through a heightened immune response

Fasting prevented the bacteria from crossing out of the gut and resulted in elevated levels of IgA, an antibody or protein that boosts the integrity and immune function of mucous membranes like those lining the intestines

Specifically, compared with the infected ad libitum mice, the intermittently fasted infected animals had lower intestinal and systemic bacterial loads and higher IgA plasma cell levels

Why this Occurred

The underlying mechanisms of the protective effects of intermittent fasting against salmonella infection are likely related to the metabolic stress elicited by fasting

Stress is capable of modifying the normal intestinal flora composition, which in turn is able to modulate intestinal IgA production

IgA is the most abundant antibody in mucosal secretions and has been recognized as a first line of defense in protecting the intestinal epithelium from enteric pathogens

Fasting & Fat Burning - Microbiome

A study published in the journal Cell Metabolism found that every other day fasting alters the gut microbiome composition to promote an increase in the number of mitochondria in the fat tissue of mice

The study described a "microbiota-fat axis" linking fasting-induced microbial shifts to a beiging in white fat tissue

One underlying mechanism was likely because of increased expression of a gene (Mct1) coding for a receptor on white fat cells that drives acetate and lactate transport across their membranes

In other words, upregulation of Mct1 resulted in elevated gut microbe fermentation products acetate and lactate that in turn promoted white adipose tissue browning

Bad gut flora makes you crave bad food. Since subing to you and dr burgs channel, ive been doing 48 to 60hr fasts every 2 weeks, and i dont have ravenous candy cravings like ive had since childhood. The stuff you guys teach is saving lives!

Fasting is such a powerful tool like he talks about. Problem is it is really hard for people to not eat, psychological more than physical. I realized during a few longer fasts I did, eating is more habit than hunger. But after talking with Jason Fung, the benefits are so great from his perspective, that it is definitely worth the temporary discomfort. Keeping the end goal in mind helps overcome the desire for food. Great video about such an important topic!

Been fasting on a 16:8 ratio for about a week and a half now. Feel fantastic. Learned to control my intake better and what I put in my body. Doing this in conjunction with not consuming dairy (been doing this for 4 months now) and have dropped 30lbs.
My wife found you and we have both been fasting together. All I can say is- thank you! More energy, faster metobolic rate and better appetite control. Never thought I'd be able to do this, but I am. You are an inspiration.

The cop out I hear about my fasting success from people is "well, it works for YOU." Translation: "I don't have the discipline for that and would rather just make excuses and complain."

Great video! Intermittent Fasting changed my lifestyle for sure. I was able to drop 160 lbs while also building lean muscle. I struggled for so long trying to eat 6 small meals per day, always feeling hungry and tired. Now I eat 1-2 meals per day, have loads of energy for my workouts, and actually feel full from my meals.

I had constipation problem from last one year.. i stated doing intermittent fasting.. and added fiber to my diet... I added anjir.. it is a indian fruit which is high in fiber and dates.. started taking apple cider vinegar, pink salt and drinking enough water... And now my stomach feels so healthy no blotting no tight stool... I stopped taking whey protein and grains too.. i fixed myself without a need of a doctor... Now after seeing this video i feel more confident.

wow, i have never heard this explained so well! i want to try fasting for the first time. I have horrible digestion (basically my whole life) and suffer from anxiety and most recently, depression. No surprise. I am really going to try this.

Man.i am 40 now .we are muslim come from small village in Pakistan.my grand pa would fast for 6 month out of year.rest of family members had all kinds diseases but not my grand pa.now I realize why my grand pa was so healthy.
