I was walking through a doorway when the door retracted backwards and the knob hit my wrist. The strike was not really painful, but enough to cause an odd lump on my wrist that I never seen before. My immediate reaction was to put ice on it, but that was not doing anything.

I googled “bump on wrist” and saw that it’s called a ganglion cyst, and that it usually lasts between 12-18 months!! 😮

I read that the ganglion cyst can be drained through “aspiration” or surgically removed at the doctor’s office, but the cost is between $500-$1000 depending on medical insurance coverage.

I read that heat therapy is the most recommended way to deal with the ganglion cyst. The heat can influence drainage by increasing blood flow to the area.

I performed the heat therapy with a wrist wrap for 1 week and then became impatient since I did not notice any changes at all.

I searched YouTube since everything is on YouTube. I watched videos of people slamming a book on the bump.

I read that trying to drain a cyst at home with a needle or popping it can cause an infection, but they say the same about popping pimples.

I read that hitting the cyst with a book can cause broken bones, but I think that’s just a problem for older people, or people with vitamin D and calcium deficiency.

I DID end up hitting the ganglion cyst with the back of my iPhone after watching the videos on YouTube.

The cyst never caused me any pain to begin with, I just could not stand looking at it on my wrist any longer.

I used medium force to hit the cyst. It flattened out and probably would have gone away, but I hit it again with medium force one more time for good measure.

My wrist never started hurting during or after the two strikes, and my wrist went back to looking normal after 3 mins.

I put a heated wrist wrap on at night to help with any necessary healing I wasn’t aware of, but I don’t think that’s needed.

Good luck

I just had my 6 year old daughter smash mine with one of her bigger child books and it worked lol. She didn’t have to use much force. I had it surgically removed and it came back and left a nasty scar/keloid. From now on, I’ll just use this method lol.

Had someone do this and it increased sensitivity, caused additional swelling and messed with my range of motion. Surgical removal fixed it.

it baffles me the first thing people do when they see a bump on their hand is to fucking hit it.

I used an encyclopedia all through high school. I had my sister do it coz she enjoyed the pain she was allowed to inflict on me

If it's a ganglion cyst that resulted from an injury it may require surgery as it will come back shortly after being flattened with a book.

Pro tips: 1) use the heaviest book you can find. (Makes a huge difference, trust)

2) gently raise your hand up at the same time as the book is coming down, to maximize the amount of force without having to slam the book very hard. This also minimizes the risk of injury.

I do it myself using this strategy.

Ive had these come and go in my wrists for the past 10+ years. Usually have one for more months out of a year than not. The book smack has never worked in making it a go away but it does seem to reduce the pain by about 50% and gives me back some range of motion in my wrist.

Nobody calls it a preacher's cyst. It's called a Bible bump.

honestly dangerous to share this without the mentioning of how dangerous it can be when its a lipoma, especially near nerves/tendons.
btw, theyre more likely than a cyst too.. so please try to not do it at home
