Fantastic. You’re the first person that makes sense of this topic and I’m glad to say I did exactly what you said which is I focused on the product and the value… and the people kind of defined themselves.

In fact… I think I defined the audience niche by defining the value one of which was… “helping people lose weight for life without needing to hire a personal trainer.”

This was a superb alternative explanation on how to define niche and yes, niche is definitely one of those weird abstract terms that means different things to different people.

Niche is definitely not where you start... not even where you end up. Instead, I see it as a narrowing developed focus over time along with your mastery and understanding of the types of problems you solve.

It's something we all tend to overthink, for sure.

Thanks for this. I have to say, I really hate niching. As a coach you can help people with so many things because we are changing mind- and emotional set which in return influences everything from personal to professional life - I sometimes joke that I could be facilitating organisational change, as well as personal trauma healing, as well as e.g. getting out of debt, childcare, starting a business and most of the other examples you gave. And it isn't even not true. I am trying hard to stick to a niche, but honestly - I wish I wouldn't need to.

Great advice! I always hear that you should first niche down when opening up a shop. And it's hard to choose! It's good to hear that it's okay to not go narrow down the niche esp in the beginning, but still picking up a broader direction as to where the business should lean to. This would be my game plan.
