Freestyle - Simple Catch Practice

Here's a simple drill to help with the freestyle catch... with the emphasis on simple.

Why do it:
Learning the FIRST move in the freestyle catch is easier than you think... as long as you slow down, and think small.

How to do it:
1) Start in posiiton 11 on your stomach.
2) With one of your arms, very softly, angle the fingers and forearm down slightly.
3) Bring the hand back to position 11, and repeat.
4) Switch arms so both arms experience the feeling.
5) Initiate a few presses with the hand, then take a full stroke of freestyle back to position 11.
6) Move forward to slow freestyle swimming, trying to maintain the initiation of the catch during your stroke.

How to do it really well (the fine points):
The simplest point to keep in mind in this, is to keep the elbow in touch with the surface of the water as you angle the fingers and forearm down. You're trying to only move the arm from the elbow forward.

Thanks for posting this. I was looking for a step-step instruction on catch, and this is a good illustration of the first step. Can you also talk about the pull back in the water & recovery? Also, what about extension of the arm when entering the water. I will certainly practice the first step with snorkel.

I was thinking during my swimming, practicing catch arm form...I understand the mechanism of arm movement, but how about increasing power for the arm pulling?? Which positions or where should be the most heighten point during the arm movement, start with into the water, then stretch forward, then start catching, then crawl downward, point of 3 o’clock position to down to point of 6 o’clock ...because if I try to start pulling hard at beginning of catch part ( about potions of 3 o’clock), my hand start wobbling, but I start pulling at position of around 4 o’clock, I feel more stable for strong pulling. Which one should I practice??

어떻게 하면 진짜로 잘할까요? (요점):
여기서 염두에 두어야 할 가장 간단한 요점은, 손가락과 팔뚝을 아래로 기울이는 동안, 팔꿈치가 수면에 닿아 있도록 유지하는 겁니다. 여러분은 오직 팔꿈치에서 손끝까지만 움직이려고 노력하고 있습니다.
