An innocuous looking device that has appeared in Utah and been used to cause chaos in at least one school is a topic of debate in safety and security.

The Flipper Zero is a digital multi-tool that some have called a pocket sized hacker's toolkit.

Videos of its ability to capture and copy signals you'd expect to be secure have gone viral.

Instead of going after the company making a tool to point out these huge security blunders you should go after the companies for having such bad opsec. Why are government buildings using insecure RFID cards to begin with?

Don't blame the messenger, blame the companies that make these horrible systems and market them as secure.

Look they going overboard and getting dramatic again

As someone passionate about security, devices like these are GOOD for security, not bad! If a $150 device can do all of these things, think of what professional devices can do! Instead of banning devices that point out flaws in security, we should be embracing them and using them to enhance security. Just because you ban something in one country, doesn't mean another country can't get that same device.

It's a similar issue to AI. Even if we try and "slow down" the progress of AI here in the US, other nefarious countries/organizations will continue working full steam ahead. In order to stay on top of our vulnerabilities, devices like these are crucial! The very last thing that we want is for all of our infrastructure to be even more insecure than it already is!

It's just a toy. More sophisticated tools exist.

The flipper device/tool isn't the problem... The computer and system vulnerabilities are...

Banning tools is foolish and doesn't fix the problems...

Does Amazon realize they sell the Hackrf One/Portapack?

The device is to test cheap technology devices sold to us, the consumers. (Car remote has rolling code, cheap rfid can be clone, NFC cards with no encryption also can be clone) the flipper is made to push companies to apply the latest security features to the products they sale to us the consumers.

This device is good for teaching and learning about vulnerabilities in technology. For genuine researchers, its use is OK. For criminals, random members of the public, and others without good legitimate intent, it's use is a violation of the Wiretap Act and its possession and use should be just as punishable as any other act of wiretapping.

It is meant as a pen testing tool, the difference between a whitehat and a blackhat in terms of techniques are not different. The goal is to raise awareness of security flaws by exploiting them in order to help promote change of security and help bring awareness to flaws that need to be patched. People can still pick a lock, and I can readily purchase lock picks off of amazon.

To use a flipper one must be tech savvy. Your ordinary Joe wouldn’t know what to do with one. I see it all the time. Thugs think they can commit crimes with one then they see that they really can’t 💯

It's a plastic box that is bringing people up to speed on how venerable everything has been for years and years already.

That tool is designed to show how bad our security infrastructure is. The flipper zero is a basic hacking device its more for learning than anything. Hackers use many other tools for instance just search onsite pentation testing.

Let's be fair. Most people are oblivious to other people and wouldn't notice someone outside their house. Also it said MOST cars and MOST cards. By who's definition of most.

Bwahahaha! Little dramatic? If this is the worst thing your kids are doing, I think everyone is going to be okay.

We used to pull pranks like this in the 90s with universal remotes on the school tvs.

The point of that device is that it can exist.
There is no revolutionary technology here.
All it does, it show us what is already possible.
Being commercially available just finally brings awareness.

news stations are so late to the game and have to exaggerate everything. "us victims who have been the dark", camera guy turns off camera. More sensationalism. Yes it does stuff, but its pretty limited especially with rolling codes now. I'm sure kids enjoy being able to turn off IR tv's, but universal remotes have been around forever to cause the same annoyance.
