This "Real Israelite Religions: Facts on the Ground and Propaganda in the Bible" course will provide an in-depth study of Israelite religions in the Iron Age.

This eighteen lecture, online course examines the religious forms and institutions of the Iron Age people who identified themselves as the "Sons of Israel." Through careful readings of the Hebrew Bible and close attention to the material culture of the region, the course offers an in-depth survey of the geography and climate of Syro-Palestine and how the natural environment shaped national and cultural ideals expressed in an agrarian calendar.

The course delves into the ancient Israelite worldview, including their polytheistic gods and their function, the structure of the world, the structure of an Israelite household, and the nature of "covenants" in the ancient near Eastern world. It explores the religious rituals and observances performed by the people of the Iron Age CisJordan and how they were idealized in the biblical texts. Additionally, it examines the nature and history of the early monarchy in Israel and Judah and how royal power deeply informed and affected religious expression.

Furthermore, the course analyzes the emergence, nature, and role of "prophets" in Israel. It places a particular focus on the Jerusalem Temple, comparing it to the archaeological remains of temple structures discovered across the Mediterranean Basin, and exploring its highly visual and performative aspects.

Lastly, the course reconstructs systems of pedagogy from biblical texts, with a specific focus on so-called "Wisdom" texts. Ultimately, the course aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the religious forms and institutions of the Iron Age Israelites, which were codified as expressions of royal power and national identity in the literature of early Judaism.

I always liked how Kipp is a scholar first, and his passion for his work makes him an excellent communicator. You can tell by his phrasing and careful detail contextualizing, how he does his work.

"Unbridled confidence" is exactly what a good apologist needs. And this is why I call apologists used-god salesmen. Their purpose is to sell belief to those who already believe, not convert others - except other Christians. It's about retention & encouraging brand switching. I won't call the whole field a scam, but it's more sales than science.

I have had the pleasure of watching Derek's journey of continuous growth as a person, learning and growing my own understanding as I followed along behind him. You sir, are a small light in a dark sky. What you do matters. Thank you from the UK.

I know many scholars feel engaging with or even acknowledging apologists is beneath them. And I get that academically and professionally-speaking, it is. But it's such a public service when scholars take the time to explain in clear, plain language the problems with apologetics generally, or why certain popular apologetic arguments aren't taken seriously within academia, specifically. Thanks Dr. Kipp, and thanks Derek for connecting scholars and their work, with the public

An excellent summary of the weakness of the entire Christian apologetics "industry". Circular reasoning and confirmation bias forms the "academic" foundation for the supposed vigorous critical research that they claim supports the Biblical narrative. That was certainly my approach as a budding apologeticist many years ago. But all it took to begin having my "walls of Jerico" moment was to conduct some serious research into the critical scholarly approach to the actual historicity of Biblical claims.

Skepticism is an important part of a beginning of science as an investigation

The Habermas reference is important. My recollection is that Habermas promised to produce his list of just such sceptics-turned-believers. This never happened as far as I know. I do wonder why.

I always wonder about how much of apologetics is lies, as in falsehoods intended to deceive, versus how much is people with a bad epistemological framework being easily convinced by stories to the point that the truth of a matter becomes defined by how emotionally engaging the story attached to it is.

I'm so happy that the Ancient Canaanite religion course will be available for a while; i really want to watch it, but I just suffered a temporary financial set-back.

As a scientist, Lee Strobel just seems like a dishonest person to me. When I watched a show where he was supposedly going to give historical evidence of the resurrection, it was all the same old apologist nonsense. All of this just boils down to this: faith is convincing yourself of something with little or no evidence and as soon as you start to really investigate the claim it becomes very difficult to maintain that faith. They'll say it all the time, just depends on your heart lol. Well, I'm sorry, that's not damn good enough when you have thousands of gods competing for my allegiance.

My brother is a retired pastor who always admired Willow Creek and visited several times. He modeled his church on it in many ways. Obviously he isn’t very happy that I have left religion behind but, once I had that moment of clarity I could never go back.
