To Reset the password restart the system, and after the BIOS screen, hold down the left Shift key. You will then be prompted by a "GNU GRUB Menu". Use the arrow keys and select the "Recovery Mode"
Now you get the Recovery Menu
from the Recovery menu Select the "root" option
Now you have the root prompt window at the bottom you need enter the following commands to change the root password in ubuntu in command line
mount -n -o remount,rw /
passwd yourusername
Enter the new password & Retype the new password
Exit
