I beg you.... don't do this. He took a big risk wearing those for as long as he did. Your foot is mostly tendons and ligaments. These tissues are slow to change and easy to rupture. Forcing ligaments that have been in one position for years into a totally new position by force for extended periods can cause them to rip apart, which can lead to permanent damage. Spacers can be useful in "SLOWLY" correcting bone alignment in the feet. Emphasis on SLOWLY. Like over months.... not days. And Definetly DO NOT wear these in shoes. Not only will it put severe pressure and the toes, but it can cause imbalances in your joint alignments that can result in other joint injuries. Wear these when you sleep with socks on to prevent them coming off for safest outcome.

Another thing about the gait issue is that the toe spacers likely limited your ability to elevate and push with your toes - effectively cutting off mobility. The collapsing inward is just your body compensating for the lack of balance awareness that comes with the movement of your toes

They went back because toe spacers are for stretching the toe not strengthening them. There are specific exercise for your feet. You also need to wear them for at least an 30 mins to an hour a day for 6+ months to notice some permanent changes. It's like any other muscle in your body.

I don't know how you do these things. I intensely hate being in physical discomfort so this is just something. The level of discipline that you have to keep going is insane. I'm always in awe whenever I watch your videos.

As a Remedial Exercise Therapist I never suggest people wear spacers for longer than 20 minutes at a time. If you forget to take them out and don't feel any discomfort it's perfectly fine to leave them in (I assume relaxing and lose thought of your feet in this case). However, as you mentioned, you will adjust your gait to better suit your new condition. This means you will adjust to avoid the new discomfort and/or pain associated... so it's likely you will lean into the more comfortable foot (leg) and have a limp like gait or roll in (ankle eversion). The small toe requires the least amount of spacing. The big toe requires the most amount of spacing.
Walking gait (just to be clear, running gait is different) should always be heel first, roll mainly on the outside edge of your foot then through the balls of the feet and last to touch and leave the floor each step is the big toe.
Interesting video. Always get a kick out of your experiments even if I can tend to predict your outcomes :p. Keep up the great content Lucas :]

Felt the same exact symptoms when I started, especially in my right big toe. Took at least 2.5 months for my feet to get used to them. What really helped me was toe socks instead of the traditional socks. IMO I felt like I was pushing in w/ the socks going against what I wanted the spacers to do. Adding toe socks really helped with the comfort and helped with toe separation as well

I think it's a slow, gradual process, much like the damage to the toes was a slow gradual process. I wear them all day at work with appropriate footwear and I see small improvements that seem to be permanent (at least I'm hoping!).

I wear them all day every day. The key is to start wearing them an hour a day and increase over time. You’ve worn ill fitting shoes for decades so getting toes spaced properly will take awhile. Nothing will change in a week. Try a year and let’s see what’s what.

This video shows the narrowness of vivobarefoot shoes, especially with the toe spacers.
I wish they made shoes for extra wide, high volume feet, because I Love all of their styles.
BeLenka, softstars and others do have options though, untill they do.
Thanks for the upload and enduring the discomfort for "science".

Tip: get toe socks (ex:injinji etc), otherwise you really arent fully getting the full benefit of your wide toebox shoes when you're wearing socks that force your toes back in; in a way you're undoing a little bit of your work

Just a tip: if you feel cramping, take off the toe separators and let your toes relax. Keeping them on all the time is a really bad idea.

Omg - I’m only 4 mins in and I’m scared for him. I have a similar pair of spreaders in my drawer. They hurt to wear longer than an hour. The small toe
Feels as if it’s being ripped
Off. Maybe now that im over a year of 90% barefoot shoe wearing, id be able to handle it more..I know for sure not as long as this dude tho!

11 mins in I can’t stop laughing 🤣 You r a beast for doing this

Yeah, doing what is not recommended with the toe spacers is a good way to mess up your toes. Get cramps, joint

I have the same toe spacers and I followed the instructions for slow and gradual use. A year later the benefits are great and I can now wear them all day in my wide toe box shoes. FYI: ski boots are narrow so would not accommodate toe spacers well.

No way I've only started wearing toe spacers in the last week! They're great

The discomfort is your muscles adjusting to the posture that it isn't used to due to years of wearing shoes and atrophy in the muscles that aren't getting activated. Also, you shouldn't wear them 24/7 and you need to spend time stretching and strengthening muscles in the feet and ankles along with the spacer use.

Awesome video, love the humor!

Your experience turned out to be pretty much opposite of what my own experience was. Just like you when I first wore them, I did get some soreness in my foot. But after about a week, they felt pretty comfortable. I would say I did not go as extreme as you to do higher level activites likes skiing or wearing them all day right from the get go, I slowly built up to it. These days I have can wear them all day with no problems, but I couldn't really imagine doing that from day 1! You're a trooper!

I have had some people say they found some success by cutting the end piece of the spacer to make it more comfortable for them, especially for the pinky toe as you described. Anyways, thanks for sharing and subscribed!
