How to start a handyman business?

Hey Aj … thanks for sharing. That’s awesome. To Answer your question. your prices are more than fair. To give you an example we are in the Philadelphia/Lancaster area of Pennsylvania… To swap out a toilet and dispose of the old one is $500… To replace a bathroom faucet or kitchen faucet is $350… To replace a ceiling fan For a ceiling that is 9 foot and under is $350… To hang a television of 60 inches and under is $350… A microwave removal and replacement $450… A garbage, disposal, removal and replacement is $350… And these are all labor only prices. so when I saw what you were charging, I thought “boy this guy is being really generous with his time” but it appears you can still make great money… $1500 days are very common… And when you’re in this business, you really do not want to work every day just because of the wear and tear on your body. It always does the heart good to see guys, bumping their prices up accordingly instead of tearing themselves down, trying to make a living… Keep up the great work…

I think the deck post price is very fair. I have one I need to get replaced and would expect at least $1000 bids. Just showing up and doing the work goes a long way. I wouldn't be surprised if others showed up and said the deck was toast and needs a $30K replacement.

If there paying the your price your not over charging, if you get every job you bid your leaving money on the table, fun balance 😊

Hey AJ, I wanted to comment on your question about pricing for the post replacement. I use Homewyse a lot and I think it’s fairly representative of the market. Bottom line is, if the customer is happy to pay what you charge, then it’s not too much. In a different market you might not be able to charge what you did, but as long as it works, keep doing it. Thanks for the video.

Stumbled across your channel a couple nights ago and very glad that I did. I've been considering a handyman business for a couple years now, but have been scared to pull the trigger. However, the encouragement you have to offer and the way you break things down makes it seem a lot less of a daunting task than keeping it all in the mind. Thanks for what you do!

AJ here. Mid 40s, gov employee x26yrs (fd), , in my mid 40s, put myself through school for a masters, two kids, Asian wife. The similarities are crazy. Ramping down from the fd and ramping up into handyman (part time now, will transition to 3/4 time upon retirement, which is very near). Been watching you for a while now. Thank you for chronicling your process and way of thinking.

One of my whys is to get paid to practice a wide array of super practical skills. In my book those are worth as much as gold. Have you read Shop Class as Soulcraft?!

Get to that beach, brotha from an otha motha! :-)

Appreciate the transparency, I’m going full time in 2024. I’ll update then, but it seems like your ceiling fan installs are low. $350 -600
Seems to be the going rate around NE

Hey AJ, thanks for sharing awesome advice on all your work! Appreciate your humbleness.

Quick question. Do you recommend getting contractor license for handyman if just doing part time ?

I'm curious as to where you are located to be able to charge these prices, I've been working in construction for about 5 years and finally decided to give my handywoman business a shot. I've been watching many handymen on YouTube to get ideas for pricing and how to run my business but it seems that everyone I watch is located in very big, populated, expensive cities where as I am located in a small town that has semi big cities located near it but I am having a hard time with pricing my jobs because I don't have any nearby examples, there's only about 3 handymen businesses near me and they are all located in the bigger cities nearby. I would appreciate any advice or comment on this!

Crazy. I live in a nice home in mission hills and have a great handyman who can do it all. Has his own tools. Can go and get supplies on his own etc. he charges me $40/hr

Lots of times he’ll be here 2-3 days knocking out random projects. So on a ~6 hour day here, he’ll make $~250.

I hate when guys want to try to bid a job since I often have lots of random little things and trying to bid every one individually would be a giant pain.

As a handyman this makes me frustrated with myself because I’m charging way to little and breaking my back doing hard jobs and making no more than 400 hundred a day . There’s been so many jobs where I could have made 600-1000 / day instead of 350-450🤦‍♂️
