Palpatine Almost Killed Anakin In Revenge Of The Sith - Star Wars #Shorts

I was rewatching Revenge of the Sith and noticed something in the scene where Palpatine reveals himself as a Sith Lord to Anakin. We all know that Palpatine wanted Anakin as his apprentice, but did you notice that he wasn’t entirely confident that Anakin would accept the dark side? He was actually preparing to defend himself. You can clearly see Palpatine shifting his hand, ready to release his lightsaber just in case Anakin attacked; just like he does when Mace Windu and the Jedi confront him a short time later. I have no doubt Palpatine would have struck down Anakin at that moment. He may have wanted Anakin as an apprentice, but he didn’t need him. Order 66 was already primed and waiting to happen.

It's unlikely Palpatine would have simply killed Anakin, plus Anakin was very powerful and skilled, but chances are he would have used surprise to disarm Anakin, i.e throw his sabre etc. And then turn Anakin to the dark side.

That would make a good what if episode if Disney ever does that

I think EVERYBODY had their guard up around Anakin especially towards the end of the clone wars homie was becoming unstable💀

He's shifting his hands to show that he uneasy with confiding this sensitive, damaging and immensely important information about himself with Anakin as he himself fears what it could do to him and his position. The movement shows nervousness, fear and Palpatine's understanding of the situation he is now in....(it is acting at its finest!)

No, Palpatine needed Anakin 100% to be sure Order 66 could have success. Without Anakin the clone would have never taken the Temple and a huge number of Jedi would have survived. With Windu in charge, Order 66 would have been effective only outside Coruscant and Windu would have gone for Palpatine's head.. ending his coup. Anakin was essential for Order 66.
Anyway if Anakin tried to attack him, Palpatine would have killed him pretty easily.

Palpatine always keeps his Lightsaber as a precaution, including if his force-clouding fails and blows his cover.

Definitely ready to defend himself, I noticed that to even from the position shift, but he did need Anakin 100% no question. Maul even goes on to claim in the Clone Wars that Anakin is the center of it all, and thus he tried to lure him to the planet Mandalore to kill him.

While technically non canon, the ROTS novel states that Palpatine actually got his lightsaber out of the statue he kept it hidden in just moments before the Jedi come to arrest him, but before then he never carried it with him at all. And in order to get it out, he had to basically melt the statue, so it was a one-and-done thing he wouldn’t be able to do again

Yeah but when he talks to Anakin, he's shifting the left hand.
Later with Windu, he does that with the right hand, the hand he then also holds his lightsaber with. I think that doesn't really mean something, but still interesting theory :)

I wonder what Palpatine was watching on that red monitor. Death Star plans ?

You're right, he was a paranoid mastermind.

He was ready to defend himself. He did need Anakin for several reasons, if not simply that he had been grooming him for soo long. However, Sidious of course did not know how Anakin would react, which is why he was ready to defend himself. He would not have killed him.

"Do you think plans it all out, or just makes it up as he goes along?"

I never noticed that detail but I did read his movements as defensive and ready to go if needed

Anakin was Sidious' Grand Prize. The Chosen One, corrupted by the Dark Side.
It wouldn't surprise me if Sidious simply delayed Order 66 in order to pull Anakin to his side beforehand.

Sidious got greedy, which made him delay Order 66 for as long as he did.

Ian McDiarmid shows a sign of Parkinson’s disease which is called “pill rolling” in the non dominant hand, his left hand in the scene with Anakin. In the scene against Mace his light saber is in his right hand.

In original script/deleted scenes we learn that palpatine takes Anakin's lightsaber away from him. That better explains also why Anakin doesn't participate in Mace/Sidius duel

which is funny because palpatine is actually so f*ckin strong with the force that using a lightsaber was basicly playing around.

I think it would have been a good fight. Let's not discredit Annakin's skills at this point in the film. A very confident Jedi, and a master if not for council politics. Also fearless. However Palpatine knew him inside and out and would be able to manipulate his emotions. Considering this is exactly how Palpatine won this fight.

There's no way that the invasion on the jedi temple goes smoothly without Anakin, and it's highly unlikely that Palpatine is killing Anakin in 1v1 combat.
