Why Did Palpatine PUNISH Vader For Killing Jedi?

Vader was absolutely obsessed with hunting down the surviving jedi after order 66. In particular, Vader wanted to find Obi-Wan Kenobi, the man who had turned him into a cybernetic warrior. However, especially in legends, Palpatine actually hated the fact that Vader was obsessed with killing Jedi. He believed that the Jedi were not a threat worthy of Vader and that such matters were better handled by others such as inquisitors. However, most of all Sidious believed that Vader could not control his hatred and anger for the Jedi. On numerous occasions, Jedi survivors were able to bait Vader Into traps, almost leading to his demise or the destruction of imperial property, leading to Palpatine punishing him harshly by leaving him on a planet with no means of escape.

In Vader's defense, he clearly knows Palpatine could use any surviving Jedi with potential to try to kill him and test if he's worthy to be still his apprentice. It's pretty annoying and repetitive when your boss tries to kill you every week

Vader probably also used it as frequent training and sparring practice for himself to keep his skills sharp, knowing he’d outclass any surviving Jedi in battle. It probably got boring for him handling routine imperial business

Vader clearly knew every time he was walking into a trap though he did it anyway because he knew he’d be OK.

To clarify Vader Is punished after he is lured in traps that make him a liability to the Empire

Other times he is doing his job

It’s not killing Jedi is bad, it’s how Vader’s obsession can be a liability

Although Palpatine believed the Jedi are not to be too worried about and should focus on building the Empire and fulfilling future plans like the Death Star

And all of this would have made more sense if Vader actually served a dedicated purpose in Palpatine's Empire; if he had a real role, or there WERE threats worthy of his caliber. My biggest problem with Vader has always been, and especially in what is now canon, he serves no purpose. The Emperor never planned to be replaced, even before Vader became the cyborg he is, so it almost seemed like getting his power broken, and future power capped, and an excuse to stick him in a lightning-vulnerable suit were all win, but even if dyads are now things, and Vader couldn't do that with his master, now, it just seems like for all Sidious' complaining, if we asked him "well, what DO you want Vader focused on? What SHOULD he be doing? What's his purpose to you beyond a reminder of your victory?", the Emperor would probably just clam up. If Vader DID get killed in some nameless skirmish, Palpatine doesn't really lose anything; the Empire doesn't lose anything. Part of Vader's own tragedy is in the world he gave up everything to be in, as he is now, he has nothing.

Plus Palpatine was looking for candidates to replace him. He had a decent list of promising Emperor’s Hands, Inquistor’s, dark Jedi, and even Prince Xizor is implied to be Force-sensitive. He just needed someone more powerful than Vader. It was so cool seeing the Empire splinter into different factions after ROTJ. So many cool warlords and dark siders.
