Many patients come to me with low back pain. As we get older lumbar disc degeneration is a common cause of this pain. As the discs shrink we lose height in our spine and when extreme the nerve roots can become compressed.
A lot of people think everyone has low back pain and it is just part of getting old, but I want you to know that there are things you can do to slow down the degeneration process.
As I mentioned in the video the lumbar discs get their blood supply through the process of osmosis. They are fed by the blood supply of the surrounding musculature. This is why core strengthening targeting the muscles closest to the spine is so important. This lumbar extension machine is one of my favorite ways to strengthen the muscles in the low back. My goal is to perform 10 sets of 10 reps each.
I flex all the way forward then extend back into a neutral spine. I do not go into lumbar hyper extension.
By the end of the workout my low back extensor muscles are tired and a little sore.

Let me know in the comments if you do this exercise and if you can complete the 10x10!
