i had a clicking coming from my external desktop hard drive (seagate 2GB) and while trying to pull it apart I discovered that the motor wasn't spinning at all or even trying to, but rather the clicking was coming from the adapter that converts my power and USB cord to the sata plug needed on the hard drive....
I removed the hard drive from the casing, and unplugged the sata adapter, and then plugged in my power cord and usb cord back into the adapter (without hd attached) and the clicking continued!!
So basically I'm full of hope that all I need to do is replace the power supply/USB, I'm gonna get a USB 3 to sata adapter and stop using the case/housing that the hard drive was in, hoping that works.
