This is the fifth track from Deep Purple's sixth album, Machine Head (1972).

Lineup (Mk II) - Ritchie Blackmore: guitar, Ian Gillan: vocals and harmonica, Roger Glover: bass, John Lord: keyboards, and Ian Paice: drums/percussion

Lyrics:
We all came out to Montreux
On the Lake Geneva shoreline
To make records with a mobile
We didn't have much time
Frank Zappa and the Mothers
Were at the best place around
But some stupid with a flare gun
Burned the place to the ground

Smoke on the water, fire in the sky
Smoke on the water

They burned down the gambling house
It died with an awful sound
Funky & Claude was running in and out
Pulling kids out the ground
When it all was over
We had to find another place
But Swiss time was running out
It seemed that we would lose the race

Smoke on the water, fire in the sky
Smoke on the water

We ended up at the Grand Hotel
It was empty cold and bare
But with the Rolling truck Stones thing just outside
Making our music there
With a few red lights and a few old beds
We made a place to sweat
No matter what we get out of this
I know we'll never forget

Smoke on the water, fire in the sky
Smoke on the water

Summer 1972, 14 years old, took the Greyhound bus from El Paso to Phoenix to visit my blonde hot girlfriend. On 3rd day of visit (we thought we were alone) she had bought this album, put it on, tweaked with a pre-amp and we’re blasting in in the living room. If was late evening we had been to Big-Surf and still had our swim suits on. Next thing, we were humping like No Tomorrow when her dad walked in on us and howlered her name at te top of his lungs behind my a$$. Let me tell you I’m glad to be alive. I will NEVER forget this album. My awakening to Sex & Rock n Roll.

I used to live around Detroit. I wish I could remember what year it was we went down to the Toledo Sports Arena to see Deep Purple. They turned out all the lights and Blackmore did a solo with a strobe light on him. It was very cool.

I received this album on my 11th birthday in 1981. At that stage I was listening to NWBHM bands and of course Motorhead.

Wow, I realise I never knew the lyrics were actually about what happened when they recorded this song. That's some zazz.
