I can totally relate to this!😂 Patients sometimes change their history when we're presenting it to the attending and it's definitely a nightmare. They tell us, 'did you even talk to the patient?'🤦‍♀️😂 Keep making these Dr Youn, these videos are wonderful! And this is definitely the best collaboration!!

This is one of the first skills we’re taught in patient school. How to gaslight med students and make them look bad in front of the attending.

Oh my God I never dreamed I'd see a collab of Dr Youn and Dr Schmidt

You can see the absolute joy in Dr Youn's face as he plays a character he has come across many times before, and gets to be the infuriating one for once

As a med student whose patient today told her she doesn't remember her age, I can completely relate.

As a nurse, I totally relate to this. It happens all the time.

"Ugh, I already explained all this already! It should be in my chart."

So relatable. The best is also when they’re rude to the nurse or other staff, barely speak and give you attitude for literally no reason and then when the doctor walks in they’re suddenly perked up and acting like a nice, completely different person because they only have respect for the doctor. Had a patient recently answer every one of my questions with a 1 word answer, but only after rolling her eyes right before answering each question. I tell the doctor I can’t get much information out of her, doctor walks in and she’s suddenly smitten, smiling, answering every question happily.

This is literally me as a patient, and it's partially because my memory is so bad that I have to sit there and think about the answers to those questions after you've left the room... Sometimes I recall more, or occasionally the doctor asks the question(s) in a way that provides me with the context that I need in order to give the appropriate answer.

10/10 accuracy! I'm a medical assistant at a dermatology clinic and part of my job is to "interview" the patient and the patients hardly answer any of the questions I ask and when the provider comes in and asks the same questions it's like an entire bibliography has been opened up😂

lmaoo i hope this makes patients more aware because this is really accurate. i’ve gotten into trouble with the doctor and my professors due to this issue, and trust me they aren’t nice about it either, they will put you on the verge of tears and make you feel stupid.

I relate so much! I am currently doing an intership as a med student and this happens all the time, no matter how detailed I'd ask. They just say different things when being asked twice.

As a nurse I can totally relate to this. The patient almost always tells me a totally different story then they'll tell the doctor. Often it's the opposite and they'll complain of sooo many symptoms and give concerning background details and then be tight-lipped when the doctor comes. Then they'll ask me afterwards what I'm going to do about all the things they told me earlier....

its like you say medical student and they instantly go "welp hes got no idea" and just shut down

This is so true. Patients will change their STORIES" with each person who interviews them.

Omg I had no idea that people do this! Don't they realize that is in their best interest to presents their problem as clearly as possible to any member of the staff?

Haha! After about a week of this on my first rotation, my attending finally had mercy on me and explained that this is a phenomenon called “Historical Alternans”, it’s normal, and there is no cure, other than just becoming the second or third person to walk into the patient’s room 😂
