Hi, I’m Owen Rosen and this is part of our frequently asked questions series. Today’s question is: “Does my car insurance cover me when I’m renting a car?”
We get this one a lot and the answer is “yes.” While there are some restrictions such as international rentals and commercial vehicles, your auto insurance will cover you when you rent a car.
Your coverage transfers SO if you only carry liability coverage on your car you will only have liability coverage on your rental. Your deductibles transfer as well. Because of this, some people do still purchase the damage waiver usually offered by rental car companies so they don’t have to worry about minor cosmetic damages that might be within their deductible. Plus, it could be frustrating to have to file a claim for a limited amount of damage on a car you don’t even own.
Along those lines, many credit cards offer supplemental protection that could eliminate the need to purchase the damage waiver from the rental car company. We usually recommend renting with American Express when possible as they have a strong policy to help with rental car damages. Many Visas and Mastercards offer similar protection so please check the details for your cards. If you have further questions, visit us at PKIG.com
