Is Your Personality Fixed, Or Can You Change Who You Are? | Invisibilia | NPR

The marshmallow test became the poster child for the idea that there are specific personality traits that are stable and consistent. And this drives Walter Mischel crazy. "That iconic story is upside-down wrong," Mischel says. "That your future is in a marshmallow. Because it isn't."

Can it be said that this proves why mental illness is more devastating than most of us realize. Thoughts and perceptions can literally make or break you.

I don't think I've ever heard the personality aspect of this particular test I've just heard the delay of self-gratification.

Great video. I have come to the conclusion on my own. Personalities do not exist. By studying the horoscopes, I've noticed that it says things like you're very organized but sometimes you're lazy and don't feel like get being organized. And I realize how accurate these statements are. I also realize how personality traits are different depending on where I am, and who I'm with.
What we think of as a personality is really just a habit. We haven't had it of being organized, and if we're honest with ourselves we're not always. Likewise if you want to change a habit like your introverted but you want to be extroverted this can be very hard cuz changing habits is very hard

Regarding this test, its been shown that SES has the biggest influence on delayed gratification which makes sense - people accustomed to scarcity are better served by taking whats available immediately rather than waiting for what isn't guaranteed.

John Stossel wasn’t saying that people can’t change. He was saying that people who act this way end up in this situation while people who act that way end up in that situation. If they change to the other way of thinking, then they will end up in the situation caused by their new way of thinking.

How about adding the microbiome to the cauldron?
There's a recent discussion about gut bacteria composition/ratio and pretty much many traits.
