I have maintained a daily yoga practice since 2008. I started at Bikram Yoga Santa Clara under the guidance of Abhi Sagar, who was very influential in my practice. I completed a 1500 day yoga challenge there. I was also practicing the Advanced Bikram Yoga series in San Jose, which includes 84 postures. When I moved back to Hawaii in 2012, I couldn’t find any studio that taught this sequence. In 2015, I started Ashtanga yoga which I felt was the closest and most challenging asana practice. Today I practice Ashtanga Yoga Mysore style at Purple Yoga. I have been teaching yoga since 2013 and I am 500 RYT certified. Besides yoga, I love surfing, which I believe is a great combo with yoga.

66 yr old here with long history of lower back issues. About 3 years ago I got serious about core training and stretching/flexibility and now I religiously do a dynamic warmup (using some of the techniques shown here, plus others) and never go surfing or body surfing without 15-20 minute warmup. Sometimes it’s a pain cuz the swells up and I just want get out there !
But since doing that my back issues have practically disappeared and I’m no longer scared that surfing will irritate it.
Lakey Peterson has some good warmup videos, and also Surf Strength Coach Cris Mills . Worth checking out.

0:11 altgough this is great, static stretches are NOT for BEFORE exercise but AFTER. Dynamic stretch is for before a session. Static stretch before exercise will make you more prone to injuries.

I do this every morning now and it has really helped me all day. I don't always do it in the same order, but I do it. Thanks for creating these videos. Love them! aloha.

i just watched this. very good, i do most of these post surf or on no surf days.before paddling out i concentrate more on fluidity especially in the hips and shoulders.not that i know all that much, all self taught from surfing for 54 years.almost 69 yo now and on chemo for stage four C over 5 years, now, surfing keeps me dedicated to my always evolving routines.mahalo for sharing 🤙😁

I highly encourage every surfer to do these exercises for two hours on the beach immediately before paddling out.

Can Clyde still pop up on a shortboard? I just saw a video of long time yoga practioner Gerry Lopez surfing at the Kelly Slater surf ranch. He is shockingly flexible, able to pop up to his feet with both hands still connected to the board and the front foot is perfectly planted sideways, i.e hips rotated. At 54 years old and after a 6 year hiatus from surfing, I am now having problems with my pop ups on the shortboard. I think yoga or stretching would really help me but am too lazy to made a commitment to do it nor found a quick and easy routine. On a side note, isn't yoga more than just stretching?
