English Writing: Punctuation (the Comma, p. 2), Essential vs. Nonessential Use

Показать описание
In this look at the use of the comma, we consider its use or non-use in relation to essential and non-essential clauses and phrases. In other words, some clauses and phrases need to be in the sentence for its meaning to be complete. In these instances, a comma is not used. In sentences where the clause or phrase is adding “extra” information, we must use a comma to tell the reader about this.

In this video we look at examples of adjective clauses (especially starting with ‘that’ or ‘which’), adjective phrases (preposition or participle), adverb clauses, noun clauses, and others.

For some learners, essential vs. non-essential may be better recognized as definite/indefinite, defining/non-defining, or restrictive/non-restrictive, depending on the grammar book they use.

I am a new graduated mechanical engineer and I look everything in a sight of engineering while learning how to write an essay. Because I know if one wants to do something perfectly, he or she has to dive into it completely and look all the minute detail inside.

THANK YOU. THIS IS THE BEST VIDEO I FOUND ON THIS SUBJECT.
Is this correct understanding???
comma that , that ? used with unnecessary info interrupting the sentence. Juanita, that girl over there, is actually my former roommate.

Also, no comma that when / no comma used with the word that when THAT specifically gives info directly about the noun or verb. Example: Sally said that she was going to buy a new dress.

It is obvious that the comma goes with the phrase, instead of that. Much appreciated . As a prep instead can be separated with comma . Not as a conjunction followed by S+V. A clause. Thanks .

A great explaination on comma sir. Have you made part 3 of use of comma? You told in the video that you will be making it soon. I can't find it anywhere. Eagerly looking for this part 3.

I don't think 3 rd part is released.
Anyways, bottom line is if the phrase or clause is essential, no comma; if it's non essential, comma; if any interpting information, use comma.

It is really helpful. Thank you for such an amazing video.
