Subaru WRX STI vs Mitsubishi EVO X - Which AWD Sedan Is Best?

The 2016 Subaru WRX STI versus the 2015 Mitsubishi EVO X MR. Though the real winner is likely the 2016 Ford Focus RS, the battle between the EVO and STI was seemingly going to be a never ending debate. That is until Mitsubishi announced 2015 is the final model year for the Lancer Evolution.

Both of these cars feature turbocharged four cylinder engines producing around 300 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque. They both have sophisticated AWD systems with active center differentials and helical limited slip differentials for the front axle. The Mitsubishi features a torque vectoring rear differntial, while the Subaru employs a Torsen style limited slip diff. Both have immense traction in nearly any condition with the right tires.

The STI’s many small victories make it the champion. Less weight with more power, a more adaptable driving position, sharp short-ratio steering, a much nicer interior and infotainment system, more cargo space, a longer range on each tank of gas, and a wonderful 6 speed manual transmission. But if we’re being honest, there are no winners here. With the death of the EVO, Subaru was able to be more conservative on the design of the new STI, with power levels relatively unchanged since 2004. So here’s to the new Ford Focus RS for bringing competition back to the AWD hot hatch segment.

Evos torque vectoring is a huge advantage in cornering or unsteady conditions

Let's not make any statements about the Golf, we can't trust Volkswagen anymore.

Dejavu around 9:10. In my experience the EVO is a better track car due to it's stiff and aggressive handling. They give you that jarring rollercoaster feedback. The Sti is a great daily driver or canyon ski car that makes your commute fun, but comfortable. I LOVE on-ramps in the Sti. The only down side is driving a manual transmission during long traffic jams. The manual trans romance dies hard in stop and crawl traffic.

The evos mod-ability was not taken into account. That's when the evo pulls ahead

That high school newspaper article was awesome

But the Evo is faster from zero to 60 despite “more weight and less HP”, doesn’t understeer in corners, is faster at the quarter mile and brakes in a shorter distance. I honestly thought this would be an unbiased review but I don’t know how it could be so inconsistent with every car journalist out there and published acceleration and skid pad test data.

I'd get the STI. I want a manual transmission and love the 6 speed in the STI. I've never really liked the styling of the EVO X. The IX was the last EVO I liked the look of

Honestly I'd take the 5 speed gearbox on the Evo any day over a 6 speed. Final gear ratios put you around the same top speed and a 5 speed in a rally car for me is a proper rally tranny.

I've test driven a 2013 STI and driven my brother's evo X quite a lot. The one thing that stuck out to me is the handling differences between the cars. The STI had plenty of grip but always tended to feel like understeer when pushed a little. Conversely, when the Evo is pushed in a curve, the car rotates nicely around its center from the apex to corner exit due to the good work done by the AYC. This is a huge thing for me, understeer isn't fun. That said, has the 15 Sti been improved in this aspect?

I want and STI so bad! I found your channel after I decided that I wanted an STI and I already have an integra. So this is probably my favorite channel out there right now. Love these kinds of videos. And start up project integra again when you get some spare time!

The fast that you are comparing Evo X, which is 9 years old with a 2016 STI proves that Evo is awesome. Streering adjustment is a very poor argument. Also the fact it has a dual clutch and not a manual is a very biased disadvantage. You kept repeating again and again that Evo is heavier, yet it has the same fuel mileage and it''s faster on track. 100 kilos is nothing if you have that transmission and that AWD system. I completely ignored the storage space part.

From what I've read, it seems like the STI is better if you want to DD it, but the EVO is better if performance is your concern.

Both of them are "Fake" rally cars. Not only would you want softer suspension, you would want more travel in the suspension too. They come from the factory to be fun daily drivers that you can take to a autocross event.

I'd take either if I had the money

I like this review but he's more biased towards the Sti being an owner of one

Subaru's lack handling and stability when going through the corners, they either oversteering or under steer when you push them to the limit, top gear UK shows exactly what happens with those two in the track.

Lol, another point I disagree with: suspension is fantastic for gravel roads, at least in Evo, not sure about STI as I never took it off road. Evo's suspension is still on lower speeds, but once you take it somewhat faster on gravel roads, suspension comes to life and it's a different vehicle. Very capable on gravel roads.
