Funny you mentioned “setting off fire alarms.” My 1st time transmitting on 40m, it set the fire alarm off in my house. That was a funny one explaining that to the central station operator 😂

Years ago I was sending CW when my neighbor called me to check if I was ok. He said my
Lights in the living room were flashing. It was my radio that was blinking the lights 3 way and off.
Laughed and I knew to unplug them whenever I was on the radio.

You're hilarious! And yes, I look at ANYTHING metal and say to myself, "Will that make a good antenna!" I built a ganged array of antennas and made a space shuttle contact on it at 2, 600 miles, during a transequatorial ducting event. Timing is everything!
