I don't even have my license yet and I participated in Winter Field Day!!! I logged info on the laptop for my friends in the Berks Amateure Radio Club. Then they allowed me to get on the radio. I was completely nervous and my stomach was in a knot. I experienced my "first kiss"!!! I made a contact in North Carolina. I'm taking my test real soon!!!

Just passed my Tech last week and now have a call sign, KC1SJZ. Took my test with a great set of VEs. Had a tradition to go to breakfast after the test. One of the best days I have had in a while.
I’m up in Vermont so lots of hills. Haven’t made any contacts yet but will eventually. Just an HT for now. Thanks for the encouragement. 73

I am 72 and started to study for my Technical license. Went to a club here on the West coast of Florida (GCARC) and joined Monday and went to their WFD yesterday to help what I could set up their antennas and watch what they did.

I'm still a relatively new ham. Been in the hobby for just over 3 years now and got my Extra back in August of 2022. A few months ago, I heard a new ham on a local repeater. He eventually got a better radio (FT 857). Can't remember what kind of an antenna he had, but it wasn't that great. I told him if he got himself a NMO Mag mount, I would give him a Comet SBB-5 antenna that I had no use for.

Days later, I heard him again and he told me he got the mag mount in. I told him I would meet somewhere in between us to pass of the SBB-5 that was taking up space. Met at a Wal-Mart parking lot and passed it off to him. Chatted for a bit them went our says. Not too long after that, heard him again on the repeater one night having a conversation with someone else I know.

The SBB-5 antenna I gave him made a huge difference in his audio quality. From talking on an HT to moving to the 857 with a half wave antenna made quite the difference.

If anyone hears a new ham on a repeater and needs some things like a better antenna, steer them in the right direction or if you got one laying around, please give or sell it to them at a reasonable price. They'll remember it and pay it forward to another new or a ham that needs some help with something.

This is an important fact. We cry that the ham radio is dying, more people are not joining etc.,
On the other hand, we have people who are gate keepers and elitists.
To have a new person continue to enjoy their newly found hobby, need to give them a warm welcome without overwhelming them :) Appreciate your take

Hello, I'm brand new. I took the exam in Melbourne on 1/21/2023. The Platinum Coast Amateur Radio Society hosted the session. I plan on attending HAMCation. My kids (age 8 and 11) are excited by the tech, and I'm helping them study for the test. My callsign is KF0LIH.

I'm not new to the hobby, but this is one of the first videos I have watched on this channel. Great take on this topic. In my own case, I actually listened before I got on because I had a scanner and I had done homework, on which ht I wanted to purchase when getting my callsign. For the record, it was the Yaesu FT60R and it is still my transceiver I use today, since I became a ham in 2009.

I was given a warm welcome to the nets I would check into and in some cases, I had met some of the people before, at various events I had gone to in the previous 16 months, such as a party at another hams house and a CANWARN training session in Toronto, or even shopping at Radioworld to pick up something. Everyone was great and I really wasn't all that nervous when talking for the first time, as I had used another callsign in order to get my feat wet in May 2008 at the CNIB in Toronto.

Anyway, great topic and great channel. Keep up the good work. 73 Gord VA3WXA

Great video... 👍 I've been a ham for awhile. Long enough ago I was a tech plus had to know code... actually went to a community College to get my license ! Was to hard just reading the book that was out and not knowing any hams/ Elmer's... got involved with a local repeater group was even on the board for awhile. Also got involved with races (radio ameture civil emergency service) Played on 10 meters a little bit too ... then changed jobs which took me away from the hobby... now just recently ordered the ham radio prep for general... not to bad of a course (still working on it) 73's N7ZXG
