A snake that can afford to move that slow can do so for a reason.

I survive from a bite by this snake when I was 10. Story: I was following a relative, a little older than me to fetch water in my village and I accidentally step on this snake. Within minutes I feel so sleepy and everything was like a dream, I feel people carrying me and some screams like in a dream. Nearest hospital was 26+ kms, my parents were not home, even the doctors thought I won't survive but luckily with God's grace Im here. My leg was paralysed for almost a year.

I absolutely understand it. They're insanely fast and insanely jumpy when they feel threatened and want to defend themselves.

Yep as a South African I can confirm these guys are tough customers ☹️

I'll trust the kids handling skills over internet experts who don't live with em 24/7

The thing you need to remember with a puffy is that they are lazy. Other snakes will generally move away when they feel you coming. A puffy will just lay there until you step on or near it then strike.

Ah yes terrifying the sound of deflating the old air mattress when your cousin finally leaves

Their bite is literally worse than their bark because they usually don't bark at all (metaphorically) they just stay still and do nothing in the hopes you'll just pass by. This leads to them statistically being stepped on by people at a far higher frequency which then leads them to respond with a swift bite in self defense. This silent "let them pass" approach is literally the reason for them being responsible for the most deaths despite not having the highest lethality and nearly zero aggression!
The black mamba, has much higher lethality but it's massive aggression and confrontational approach makes you run away with brown pants.
Inland taipans and boomslangs have supreme toxicity (taipan is #1 in the world) but they are nervous and shy so will exit camouflage to run or coil up threateningly to avoid confrontation. You have to grab a boomslang like an idiot to get it to bite you.

It's fascinating that aggressive or nervous snakes have low kill counts specifically because of raising alarms but a pacifistic hide and seeker cause most of the deaths.

I too can say I am accustomed to seeing these sun-bathing, road blocking, hissy fit throwing, too lazy to chase, too lazy to flee, sausage looking nope ropes.

Puff adders are definitely not a snake you want to be messing with especially out in the wild.

Kevin Richardson lost a teenage lion from a Puff Adder snake bite.

You forgot to mention that they're nearly impossible to spot while walking in the bushveld, and they rely on camouflage to survive so they go still to blend in when a threat is near and will bite if you accidentally step on them
