Fair play from the US authorities to say it's 100% legal and in international waters and admitting they do the same thing near russian/chineese borders.

They are literally testing the waters right now.

This was the geopolitical equivalent of a group of armed people outside your house on the sidewalk (public property), near your property, but not actually stepping onto your property.

China and Russia: Let's do some naval maneuvers near the Aleutians. It will surprise them.
C.I.A.: We knew you were coming before you got there.

This is not considered threatening, but can be considered as raising the tension

I really appreciate that two times the news was put “in context.”

Imagine if America ran military drills off the Chinese coast.
Edit: I’m being sarcastic. I know US runs drills all the time off their coast.

We need to not just pay attention on top the water, but what's underneath the water.

Clearly this exercise was not announced, as is the norm when assembling assets near another country. It comes off as a meek probing action to gauge the reaction.

RE: the water cannon incident - correct me if I'm wrong but didn't the PH coast guard say they'd be escorting those resupply vessels to Ayungin Shoal from now on (i.e., at the time, 2 years ago)? What happened?

How the hell do they not consider that a threat with everything going on

As this is merely bringing the 'Freedom of navigation' notion back to the US' coasts, there is no need for the US to over-react. And mind you, the Russian and Chinese vessels are doing so in international waters.

Maybe they should have a water balloon fight to ease the tensions?

When we go to Taiwan, we are not a threat. When Chinese go Alaska, big concerns. Why on earth can’t we all stop doing this.
